Job description

Working alongside a trained nurse to deliver safe, personal and effective care is the main responsibility but an enthusiasm to develop yourself within the role is desirable. Further knowledge of basic life support, physiological measurement recording, safer handling and equality and diversity are all areas in which training can be provided for the successful candidate.

The role will involve assisting the patients with their daily activities of living, washing, dressing, nutrition, hygiene, etc to maintain an excellent standard of patient care. You will be required to work on a rotational basis with night shifts included.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist nursing staff with the admission and discharge process of patients.
• Contribute to the welcoming of patients/relatives when they arrive on the ward.
• Weigh patients and chart weight.
• Assist with making occupied beds and strip and clean unoccupied beds, according to control of infection policies.
• Help patients to prepare for meals and assist in the service of meals.
• Help with the feeding of patients in all age groups, including patients with disabilities.
• Assist with bathing in bed and in the bathroom, with turning and moving of patients, including the use of mechanical aids and bed appliances.
• If required, help patients with personal hygiene, including care of hair, teeth and nails and under supervision, assist with oral hygiene of conscious patients.
• Assist in the care of pressure areas and the care of the incontinent patient.
• Participate in the general care of patients in hospital e.g., dressing, undressing, taking to the toilet and using sani-chairs and commodes.
• Participate in giving and/or removing toilet utensils.
• Care of sanitary utensils, including disinfection of baths, bins and commodes after use and the disinfection of beds and lockers according to hospital policy.
• Be responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of all clinical areas, including waiting areas, stock rooms and patient areas.
• Assist nursing staff with effective stock control and cost effectiveness via on-line ordering.
• Answer telephone, take, and record/ transmit messages to qualified staff.
• Carry out errands between wards/departments, including the collection and delivery of specimens to the laboratory.
• Assist with movement of patients to other wards, clinics or departments by either walking them or with the patients in chairs or trolleys/beds, and undertake chaperon and escort duties.
• Help patients with the care of their personal belongings.
• Report to the person in charge, all observations made of the patient.

Requirements:

Previous care experience is also desirable ideally gained in a healthcare environment. In house training will be provided.
