Job description

Maybush Medical Centre is looking to recruit an experienced healthcare assistant (HCA) to join our friendly practice team.

We are a successful practice with high standards of care, serving almost 10,000 patients. We are actively seeking to increase our patient list.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a dedicated and friendly HCA who will integrate well into our high-performing team.

We ideally require 20 hours across 5 days, but we can be flexible for the right candidate. You will support the practice nursing team in delivering nursing services, assisting with treatment, preventative care, health promotion, and patient education.

About us

Located on the outskirts of Wakefield city centre, our practice offers ample free parking and good public transport links.

We operate from purpose-built premises and are a SystmOne site.

Maybush is an accredited training practice for student nurses, GPs, and medical students, providing opportunities for clinical and non-clinical development.

Job responsibilities
  • Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, and record findings accurately.
  • Conduct annual reviews for chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and asthma.
  • Facilitate routine and 24-hour blood pressure monitoring.
  • Perform ECGs.
  • Carry out BMI checks and provide weight management advice.
  • Administer blood tests.
  • Conduct spirometry tests.
  • Administer intramuscular injections under PSD.
  • Undertake wound care and simple dressings.
  • Remove sutures.
  • Undertake NHS health checks.
  • Process samples such as urine, ensuring specimens are recorded and ready for transportation.
  • Ensure clinical rooms are stocked and prepared for each session.
  • Manage clinical waste and sharps disposal according to IPC policies.
  • Monitor and record vaccine/cold chain storage, including weekly data logs.
  • Order and control stock of medical equipment and vaccines.
  • Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during, and after patient care, including assisting GPs during minor procedures.
  • Act as a chaperone as required.
  • Participate in administrative tasks to support the practice in meeting QOF targets.

  • Healthcare qualification (or working towards)
  • ECG certification
  • Immunisation and vaccination certification
  • Wound care certification
  • Chronic disease management experience
Experience
  • Experience working in a primary healthcare setting
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Experience working with General Practice
Knowledge and Skills
  • Understanding of primary care policies, including PMS contract, Clinical Governance, and QOF
  • Knowledge of primary care health needs
  • Understanding of equal opportunity and diversity issues
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Time management and workload prioritization skills
  • Experience with SystmOne
