An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Health Care Assistant to join our expanding nursing team. We are looking to increase our HCA support by 16 - 18 hours to be worked over 2/3 days.
Main duties of the job
- Venepuncture, BP checks, height, weight monitoring, urinalysis and phlebotomy.
- Participate in programmes for the management of long-term conditions.
- Provide lifestyle advice to patients and make necessary referrals.
- Encourage self-care and self-management of self-limiting conditions through health promotion.
- Ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed.

You will be joining an established hard-working friendly team that have regular social events throughout the year. We have clinical meetings on a weekly basis with the larger clinical team as well as nursing team meetings. You will be well supported within the practice.

Denton Turret has 3 GP Partners, 2 salaried GP, 2 Advanced nurse practitioners, 1 Emergency care practitioner, 2 Practice nurses and 2 HCA's within the clinical team.
As part of Newcastle Outer West Network, we have access to First Contact Physiotherapists, First Contact Mental Health workers, Dieticians, Counsellors, Pharmacists and Lifestyle coaches.
Job responsibilities
- Job Title: Health Care Assistant
- Reports to: Practice Nurse clinically; Practice Manager administratively/organizationally
- Accountable to: Practice Manager / Partners
- Hours: 16 hours per week
The post-holder will:
- Work under the direct supervision of the Practice Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific Practice guidelines and protocols, assisting the Practice clinical team with the care of Practice patients, including treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education, and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.
Main responsibilities
- Nursing
- The post-holder will perform various nursing duties, including:
- Venepuncture, glucose tolerance tests, blood pressure checks, height and weight monitoring, BMI, urinalysis, phlebotomy.
- Participation in programmes for the management of long-term conditions (e.g., basic annual diabetic, coronary heart disease / NHS Health Checks, asthma and other relevant clinics).
- Provide lifestyle advice to patients and make necessary referrals within the Practice.
- Encourage self-care and self-management of self-limiting conditions through health promotion.
- Ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed.
- Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses.
- Administrative and Professional responsibilities
- Ensure accurate and legible notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patient’s notes.
- Ensure the clinical computer system is kept up to date with accurate details recorded.
- Ensure clinical targets are achieved at all patient contacts.
- Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the Practice.
- Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports.
- To assist in seasonal and special projects as requested (e.g., flu campaign).
- Order and display Health Promotion materials.
- Restock consumables for medical equipment and restock clinical areas and consulting rooms.
- Act as a chaperone when requested to, either by a patient or a clinician.
- Management of appointment system
- Book appointments and recalls ensuring sufficient information is recorded.
- Infection Control
- Use and encourage others to adopt appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards, including handwashing, universal hygiene procedures, collection and handling of laboratory specimens, waste disposal, decontamination of instruments and equipment, reporting sharps injuries, and dealing with spills; ensure cold chain principles are understood and applied.
- Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs within area of responsibility; ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly and sharps bins are ready for collection with accurate labeling.
- Be able to identify health risks from microbiological and chemical hazards within the working environment (CoSHH).
3. Service Improvement
- Be aware of and assist in clinical audits where appropriate; contribute to local guidelines, protocols and standards; work with colleagues on development of current and new services; stay informed about current approaches to patient care in general practice.

Qualifications
- Care Certificate for Health and Social Care

- Experience in Primary or Secondary Care
