You will report directly to the Deputy Head of the Safety and Staff Wellbeing Division and will participate as a senior member of a professional safety, health, environmental compliance and wellbeing (SHEW) team.

You will provide advice, guidance and support across the University on all matters relating to Fire Safety. Ensuring all University fire safety policies and procedures are in line with UK regulations.

This is a full-time, open-ended post.

Salary: £51,039 - £55,755 per annum (Grade 7)

Job Description

The Health and Safety Manager (Fire Safety) provides advice, guidance and support across the University on all matters relating to Fire Safety. Ensuring all University fire safety policies and procedures are in line with UK regulations.

Key Duties

Management and Leadership

  • Act as the University’s competent advisor relating to all fire safety matters, providing professional advice and guidance on health and safety processes and procedures to internal and external customers that will have institute wide impacts, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action, ensuring complex issues are understood.
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently where they fall within set role objectives.
  • Investigate and analyse specific SHEW issues (including accidents and incidents), creating recommendation reports, supported by advances within SHEW.
  • Coordinate the University fire risk assessment programme, carrying out fire risk assessments, preparing reports and monitoring the action plans arising, where required.
  • Attend School Safety Health and Environment committee meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Lead on incident and accident investigations where required, report findings and recommendations and maintain records.
  • Contribute to the development of the University Safety Health and Environment management systems.

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Ensuring all University fire safety policies and procedures are in line with UK regulations
  • Ensure that the provision of health and safety compliance is delivered to the institution, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements.
  • Investigate and analyse specific issues within health and safety, creating recommendation reports, supported by advances within health and safety compliance.
  • Instruct and guide other employees across the University within health and safety compliance.

Networks and Co-working

  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required.
  • Create specific working groups from colleagues across the University to achieve school/departmental / University objectives.
  • Plan and deliver specific small-scale projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed.
  • Liaise with the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Team Development

  • Develop and deliver fire safety training courses and presentations
  • Work with fire safety roles within the University to ensure knowledge and competence

General Duties

  • All members of the Safety and Staff Wellbeing team are required to use their expertise wherever and whenever required, which includes activities beyond the responsibility and activities within this job description.
  • Ensure that an understanding of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
  • Undertake administrative duties to support the department
  • Abide by University policies on Health, Safety, Equality and Diversity.
  • Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.
  • Contribute to the development of the University SHEW management systems.
  • Any other duties as may be required by the Head/Deputy of Safety and Staff Wellbeing, which are commensurate with the grading of the post.

Qualifications And Education

  • Degree/NVQ 6 or equivalent Professional membership/experience

Knowledge, Skills And Experience

  • Substantial experience of working within Fire Safety
  • Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within Fire Safety to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers
  • Proven experience in developing new processes and procedures

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working

  • Ability to communicate detailed and complex information effectively and professionally to a wide range of people
  • Ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered
  • Ability to develop networks to contribute to long term developments

Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving

  • Ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose practical solutions
  • Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within specialist discipline
  • Ability to undertake specific projects and supervise short term project teams

Desirable Criteria

  • Postgraduate/Professional qualification
  • UKAS accredited Fire Risk Assessor (or equivalent)
  • Experience of working in Higher Education
  • Fluency in Welsh
