Job Description:

About The Role

GRAHAM is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and dynamic individual with sound knowledge of construction methods, safety, health, and environmental legislation, and processes and procedures.

The successful candidate will report to the Head of H&S and will provide help and advice on our flagship New Children’s Hospital and other schemes across Northern Ireland, including reviews and support for improvements to existing SHE procedures.

The post holder should have a proactive and enthusiastic attitude and be able to interact effectively with site teams, various business units, and the Client’s teams to establish good relationships. This role is significant within the company as we aim to keep the workforce safe, meet our objectives, and ensure ongoing compliance with current H&S and Environmental legislation.

The Health & Safety Advisor shall:

  • Provide support, advice, and guidance to the Project Management team on H&S matters.
  • Promote our health and safety ethos and culture at all levels within the company and with subcontractors.
  • Lead and deliver health & safety initiatives.
  • Conduct site health, safety & environmental compliance, and behavioral/cultural audits.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and high potential observations.
  • Assist with and/or deliver relevant training programs.
  • Deliver induction programs, toolbox talks, and briefings as required.
  • Review relevant company and subcontractor paperwork, including procedures and forms.
  • Prepare information for site bulletins.
  • Prepare legislation updates and advisory memos for site management and operatives.
  • Assist in preparing and updating construction phase plans, method statements, and risk assessments.
  • Assist in environmental management plans and site waste management plans.
  • Encourage observation reporting.
  • Attend and represent the company at industry forums.
  • Lead by example.

From time to time, the post holder may also:

  • Assist with responses to PQQ, bid, and tender questions.
  • Assist with applications for waste exemptions, permits, and licenses.

Essential Competencies:

  • Professionally qualified in Health and Safety (NEBOSH/NCRQ, BSc or MSc in Safety).
  • Proven track record as an operational Health and Safety Advisor within construction.
  • Holder of CSCS / CSR / Safepass card.
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant health & safety legislation.
  • Understanding of construction processes.
  • At least 5 years’ H&S experience in construction or related disciplines.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in water, rail, or highways sectors.
  • Strong communication, numeracy, and literacy skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Desirable Competencies:

  • NEBOSH Diploma.
  • Experience working directly with site teams.
  • Working towards or possessing Cert IOSH or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of management standards like HSG65 / Safe-T-Cert.
  • Awareness of quality and environmental management systems.
  • Knowledge of Behavioral Based Safety approaches.
