Main Purpose of the Role
The postholder will help coordinate, facilitate, manage, train, and promote continual improvement of Health and Safety awareness within the College. The successful candidate will be keen to develop their Health and Safety experience in a challenging and high-performing environment, with potential for additional responsibilities and career progression.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Undertake property inspections around the college estate, including Fire Safety inspections, Fire Risk Assessments, and boarding accommodation, following the H and S Inspection Programme.
- Assist with traffic and pedestrian safety management around the estate, communicating with residents, the community, and stakeholders.
- Coordinate with contractors to schedule, arrange, and oversee maintenance work, including managing contractors not DBS registered.
- Provide administrative support such as minute-taking, document scanning, photocopying, answering phones, and responding to emails.
- Coordinate DSE assessments and follow-up actions with staff.
- Organise and communicate with department heads regarding the annual Health and Safety staff training programme to ensure participation and engagement.
- Manage the Health and Safety e-learning training database and matrix (iHASCO).
- Compile, interpret, and disseminate the termly accident report.
- Assist with the ongoing risk assessment review cycle and feedback.
- Assist with the annual policy review cycle, ensuring policies are accurate and reflect current operations.
- Manage COSHH and related administration, researching software solutions to assist with this.
- Write and review risk assessments, proposing and implementing changes to working practices and policies in compliance with legislation.
- Provide health and safety advice and guidance to colleagues and department heads, confidently and accurately.
- Procure and monitor health and safety equipment and supplies.
- Maintain health and safety notices and signage.
- Keep health and safety records and prepare reports, including accident and incident investigations.
- Report defects using specific software (Flow 360) and coordinate corrective actions.
- Attend and chair meetings in the absence of the Deputy Head of H and S.
- Carry out risk assessments for new and expectant mothers and follow-up actions.
- Be highly visible and involved around the college.
- Conduct research on areas requested by the Head of H and S and Security or Deputy Head H and S.
- Perform any other reasonable duties as requested by the Deputy Head of H and S or the Head of H and S and Security.
Person Specification
The successful candidate will have experience in:
- Good knowledge of safe working practices.
- Working independently and prioritising a demanding workload effectively.
- Understanding of GDPR principles and application.
- Full driving licence for travel around the college estate.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills, adaptable to different settings and audiences.
- An energetic and positive approach to work.
- Solution-focused attitude.
- Ability to make things happen, including enforcing and re-enforcing policies and practices.
