Doncaster Sheffield Airport is hiring a Health and Safety Advisor to provide professional health and safety guidance across departments and help shape the airport's safety culture.

You will develop and amend safety policies, administer risk assessments and contribute to an active Safety Management System, working with managers, employees and contractors. A strong emphasis on data-driven reporting, investigations and continuous improvement is essential.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is preparing to relaunch, and we are seeking an experienced, motivated and forward-thinking Health and Safety Advisor to play an important role in supporting the airport’s return to operations. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of rebuilding and shaping the future of one of the UK’s most promising regional airports. Working within the Health, Safety and Fire Safety Team, you will provide professional health and safety advice across a diverse and developing airport environment and help establish the standards, systems and culture that will support safe and compliant operations. We are looking for a recognised health and safety practitioner who can combine strong professional knowledge with a practical approach. You will work collaboratively across all airport departments, helping managers understand and manage their risks while having the professional confidence to challenge arrangements where standards or controls are not sufficient.

This is more than a traditional advisory role. You will have the opportunity to influence how health and safety is developed across a reopening airport, contribute to policies and procedures, analyse safety performance and help shape a modern, data-driven Safety Management System.

About the Role

As Health and Safety Advisor, you will act as a professional Health and Safety Business Partner to departments across Doncaster Sheffield Airport, providing competent advice, guidance and support across a broad range of operational activities. You will maintain comprehensive and current knowledge of relevant UK health and safety legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, regulatory guidance and recognised industry standards. You will use this professional knowledge to identify changes affecting DSA and support the development and amendment of airport health and safety policies, procedures, standards and guidance.

Given the diversity of airport operations, you will need to understand the activities and risk profiles of different departments and translate legislative and organisational requirements into practical arrangements appropriate to their individual environments.

You will work collaboratively with managers, employees, contractors and third parties to identify hazards, assess risk and develop proportionate controls. Where arrangements are inadequate, you will be expected to provide professional challenge, recommend appropriate improvements and support significant concerns where necessary. A key part of the role will be supporting the implementation, administration and continual improvement of the airport’s Safety Management System (SMS) and associated reporting platforms. You will help maintain the integrity and quality of safety information, analyse accident, incident, near-miss, assurance and performance data and turn that information into meaningful safety intelligence. This will include producing key safety dashboards, reports and executive safety decks containing vital safety data, performance indicators, trends, emerging risks and areas requiring management attention. Your analysis will help inform decision‑making by the Health and Safety Manager, Head of Health, Safety and Fire Safety, Airport Leadership Team and relevant safety governance forums.

You will also support DSA during external assurance and regulatory activity, including engagement with organisations such as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), British Safety Council and other relevant enforcing, regulatory or assurance bodies.

Key Responsibilities Include

• Acting as a professional Health and Safety Advisor providing competent health and safety advice across DSA departments.
• Supporting the development, review and amendment of DSA health and safety policies, procedures, standards and guidance in response to legislative change, organisational developments, audit findings and operational learning.
• Supporting the implementation, administration and continual improvement of the airport’s Safety Management System.
• Acting as an administrator for electronic safety reporting and assurance platforms and maintaining the quality and integrity of safety information.
• Analysing safety performance information to identify trends, recurring events, emerging risks and opportunities for improvement.
• Producing professional safety dashboards, reports, management information and executive safety decks for senior leadership and governance forums.
• Supporting and, within competence, leading investigations into accidents, incidents, near misses and safety observations, identifying immediate, underlying and organisational causes and appropriate corrective actions.
• Undertaking workplace inspections, audits, surveys and assurance activities across DSA’s operational environments.
• Providing professional advice on the development and review of risk assessments, COSHH assessments, Safe Systems of Work and other risk‑control arrangements.
• Reviewing and challenging risk assessments and controls to determine whether they are suitable, sufficient and proportionate to the activity.
• Supporting contractor safety arrangements, including RAMS review.
• Professionally challenging unsafe practices or inadequate controls and escalating significant or unacceptable risks through the appropriate management arrangements.
• Monitoring health and safety performance and supporting departments with the effective management and closure of corrective actions.
• Developing and delivering inductions, toolbox talks, safety briefings, campaigns and other health and safety awareness activities.
• Supporting DSA during audits, regulatory inspections, assurance reviews and other external assessments.
• Working collaboratively with all departments to share learning, improve standards and promote a positive and proactive safety culture.
• Supporting organisational change and ensuring health and safety considerations are appropriately integrated into new and revised activities.
• Maintaining accurate, controlled and auditable health and safety records and documentation.

The Successful Candidate

We are looking for a professionally credible and knowledgeable health and safety practitioner who can operate effectively within a complex and evolving airport environment. You will have comprehensive knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and its practical application, together with the ability to interpret legislation, guidance and technical information and translate it into practical advice appropriate to different operational environments. You will be comfortable working across a broad range of departments and building effective relationships with managers, employees, contractors and external stakeholders. The role requires someone who can collaborate and influence, but who also has the professional confidence to challenge. There will be occasions where your advice requires an established working practice to change, additional controls to be introduced or an issue to be escalated. You will therefore need to communicate confidently and explain the professional basis for your advice. Strong analytical capability is equally important. You will work with significant volumes of safety information and must be able to look beyond individual statistics to identify trends, emerging risks and areas requiring organisational attention. You should be confident using electronic safety management and reporting systems and capable of transforming safety data into clear, professional reports and presentations for senior leaders. You will be organised, proactive and capable of working independently while managing competing priorities. The airport is a dynamic operational environment, and planned work can be interrupted by incidents, emerging risks and requests for professional advice. Experience within aviation would be advantageous; however, applications are also welcomed from experienced health and safety professionals from other complex or high-risk sectors who can demonstrate transferable professional knowledge and experience.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

For this role, you will need:

• A Level 6 qualification in Occupational Health and Safety or working towards, such as the NEBOSH Level 6 National Diploma, or equivalent relevant professional qualification/competence.
• Recognised professional membership of IOSH at an appropriate level, or demonstrable eligibility and commitment to professional progression.
• Evidence of continuing professional development sufficient to maintain current professional knowledge.
• Comprehensive knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and its practical application.
• Significant experience providing professional health and safety advice within a complex operational organisation.
• Experience interpreting and practically applying health and safety legislation and regulatory guidance.
• Experience undertaking and reviewing risk assessments and safe systems of work.
• Experience undertaking or supporting accident and incident investigations.
• Experience undertaking workplace inspections, audits or assurance activities.
• Experience analysing safety information and identifying trends and emerging risks.
• Experience producing professional reports, dashboards, presentations or management information.
• Experience influencing managers and professionally challenging unsafe or inappropriate working practices.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, exercise professional judgement and effectively manage competing priorities.

Desirable

• Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) or are actively working towards Chartered status.
• Experience within aviation, transport, infrastructure, engineering, construction or another safety‑critical environment.
• Knowledge or experience of ISO 45001 management systems.
• An accident investigation qualification.
• A recognised teaching or training qualification.
• Experience delivering health and safety training, inductions, toolbox talks or safety campaigns.
• Experience supporting regulatory inspections or external assurance activity.
• Experience engaging with external bodies such as regulators, certification organisations or the British Safety Council.
• Understanding of behavioural safety, human factors and organisational safety culture.
