The Wellcome Genome Campus is a leading genomic research campus and home to some of the world's foremost institutes and organisations in genomics and computational biology, including the Wellcome Sanger Institute (“Sanger”) and the European Bioinformatics Institute. Sanger is Wellcome’s largest charitable initiative, having founded and funded the Campus and Sanger since 1992. Today, over 2,500 people work at the Campus that comprises approximately 1 million square feet of space within a beautiful 135-acre estate in Hinxton, 9 miles south of Cambridge.
The Campus is situated within one of the most dynamic and innovative life sciences ecosystems in Europe, home to over 30 science and technology parks within a 10-mile radius of Cambridge, making it Europe's largest biotechnology cluster. The region is also well-positioned to benefit from the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor initiative, which aims to boost the economy by £78 billion by 2035 through infrastructure development, fostering innovation, and attracting investment in high-tech industries, including life sciences.
In 2020, planning permission was granted to expand the Campus from 125 acres to 440 acres, including up to 150,000 sqm of flexible space for R&D, laboratories, offices, and other uses, as well as 1,500 homes for staff and their families, new community facilities, and social infrastructure such as nurseries, conferencing centers, hotels, retail, leisure, food, and drink options, along with landscaping, biodiversity enhancements, energy centers, and transport and utility works. The expansion is already underway, with highway and enabling works ongoing, and the first new buildings scheduled to start on site in 2025.
Reporting to the Head of Health, Safety and Risk, the Health and Safety Advisor will serve as the primary operational liaison between WGCL and campus occupiers on health and safety matters. Responsibilities include managing statutory compliance, contractor inductions, delivering the campus fire risk assessment plan, and owning the permit to work processes, including the implementation of the new e-permit system.
The ideal candidate will be a Health & Safety professional with experience in large-scale, commercial, campus environments. They should be process and data-driven, possess excellent interpersonal skills, and have the professional credibility to engage with senior management and stakeholders across the campus. This role offers an exciting opportunity for candidates looking to advance their Health and Safety career in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
