Job description

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Headteacher to lead our Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in North Powys. The PRU provides educational provision for pupils aged 5-16 who are permanently excluded or at risk of exclusion from their mainstream school, as well as other pupils for whom the local authority has a statutory responsibility. The core offer includes short-term placements with the aim of successful reintegration into mainstream settings and achieving accreditation to support pupils into the next stage of their education, employment, or training.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic leadership and management of the PRU.
  • Work with the Management Committee to develop and implement policies and strategic direction.
  • Lead partnership working with local schools and other service users.
  • Ensure high standards of teaching, learning, and pupil achievement.
  • Manage and deploy staff effectively, ensuring continuous professional development.
  • Oversee pupil wellbeing, behaviour, and attendance.
  • Maintain effective links with parents, carers, and other stakeholders.
  • Attend Local Authority panels to provide specialist input.
  • Arrange outreach and training to schools.
Requirements:
  • Recent, successful experience and knowledge of teaching pupils with a wide range of additional learning needs, including significant social and emotional difficulties.
  • Proven track record of successful school leadership.
  • Experience in performance management and enhancing the professional development of staff.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to social inclusion and the principles of equal opportunities.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • NPQH or equivalent management qualification (or in the process of gaining qualification).
  • Relevant in-service training.
