Job Title: Head of Technical Services
Location: Midlands

Reports To: Engineering Director

The Role

As Head of Technical Services, you will lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for the technical integrity, performance, and compliance of the train fleet. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring maintenance strategies, engineering standards, and asset management practices support safety, reliability, and long-term value.

This is a strategic leadership position requiring a strong blend of technical knowledge, regulatory understanding, and operational delivery within the railway sector.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop the Technical Services team, including fleet engineering, technical support, and asset management functions
  • Own and manage the fleet engineering strategy, ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company objectives
  • Oversee the investigation and resolution of technical incidents and failures
  • Lead on modifications, safety cases, reliability initiatives, and obsolescence management
  • Drive continuous improvement in fleet performance, lifecycle cost, and environmental impact
  • Act as the technical lead in liaison with ROSCOs, OEMs, the ORR, RSSB, Network Rail, and other external stakeholders
  • Support new fleet introductions and oversee technical elements of major overhaul and refurbishment projects
  • Provide technical governance for maintenance regimes, standards, and engineering change control

What We're Looking For
  • Proven experience in a senior engineering or technical leadership role within the rail industry
  • In-depth knowledge of railway fleet maintenance, rolling stock systems, and regulatory frameworks
  • Strong background in engineering compliance, safety management systems, and asset management
  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline (Chartered Engineer status preferred)
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to influence and drive change
