Job description

Head of Supply Chain & Commercial, Peterborough based – Competitive Salary, plus benefits

National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

The Operations team maintains, repairs, and upgrades 7,666 km of high-pressure pipe, 23 compressor stations, 504 above-ground installations, and 8 connected distribution networks through a highly skilled team of over 600 technicians and engineers across Great Britain. We work around the clock to maintain and enhance the infrastructure that powers homes, businesses, and industries, guaranteeing a steady and secure energy supply.

We are looking for a Head of Supply Chain & Commercial to lead the function in the East region. You will manage and deliver supply chain and commercial performance in both pre- and post-award environments, adhering to central processes and governance. The role covers the complete project and portfolio lifecycle from inception to operations, decommissioning, and closeout.

Join us, and help be the energy behind the change.

About the role:

As Head of Supply Chain and Commercial, you will sit at the regional leadership table and be involved in all aspects of running a successful region, including shaping how commercial and supply chain activities drive performance and support broader business goals.

You will lead and manage the East region’s Supply Chain & Commercial team, acting as a coach and mentor, fostering a positive, collaborative, and high-performing team environment.

You will oversee activities including pricing, commercial models, contract reviews, and business and project risks, while also developing commercial intelligence across all functions in the region and developing commercial talent.

Overseeing procurement activities for cost-effectiveness and managing project budgets, forecasts, and reports are key aspects of this role.

You will ensure high standards are maintained in line with compliance, policies, procedures, and governance, and develop risk mitigation strategies, conducting regular commercial risk assessments and reviews.

Developing and maintaining commercial performance metrics and KPIs, you will prepare and present regular commercial performance reports to senior management and stakeholders, ensuring transparency and accuracy in reporting.

What You’ll Be Doing

The successful candidate will possess exceptional leadership skills, including experience managing and developing remote teams. Proven experience in Utilities, Construction, Oil & Gas, or similar industries, with a deep understanding of their challenges and opportunities, is required.

Experience on large projects (£100m+) and multiple smaller projects (£3-5m+) is essential.

Experience with NEC contract suite (especially ECC, NEC3, NE4) and managing procurement teams within Utilities or Public Contract Regulations environments is required.

Proven ability in contract negotiations, claims management, and portfolio commercial management is essential.

You will role model excellent leadership behaviors, fostering a culture of openness, trust, and collaboration, inspiring your team and stakeholders.

This role is based at our Peterborough regional office, and applicants need to be within traveling distance. The expectation is to work from Peterborough and other National Gas sites at least three times a week.
