Job summary

Study Group is seeking a proactive academic lead at the University of Huddersfield International Study Centre. You will manage the Engineering, Science and Computing team, oversee the delivery of an engaging ESC curriculum, and coordinate assessment and progression activities.

You will work with VLE resources, support staff development, and contribute to centre planning. The role emphasizes effective teaching, inclusivity, and collaborative planning with the DoCO and partner institutions.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Contract Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Location: Huddersfield,University of Huddersfield International Study Centre (On-site)
Salary: up to £44212.00 per annum.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Management Duties
  • Line manage, develop and appraise the Engineering, Science and Computing (ESC) Team
  • Maintain and develop the ESC provision delivered by the Centre
  • Participate in ESC Team meetings at Provider (Study Group) level
  • Organise and chair Programme meetings to a schedule directed by the DoCO
  • Organise subject based induction activities including diagnostic testing e.g. Maths
  • Creating and updating module handbooks
  • Liaising with link tutors regarding performance of progressed students, access to resources and school based activities
  • Analysis of module data including module review and progression and input proposals into the Annual Evaluation Report
  • Review of module specifications and schemes of work to ensure that reading lists and content remain current
  • Liaising with the VLE champion to ensure that Brightspace ESC content is current and meets level 1 and 2 of Study Group’s VLE framework
  • Coordination of moderation and standardisation and preparing work for the external examiner
  • Participate in the planning and delivery of Progression week activity
  • Proposing and coordinating subject based enrichment
  • Reviewing the quality of exams and assessments in conjunction with the DoCO
  • Communicating key assessment regulations to subject staff
  • Planning for staff continuous professional development activity
  • Represent the ESC department at termly Departmental Reviews with the DoCO to reflect on current practice and plan for improvements. The list of duties is not exhaustive but outlines the main features of the post at appointment and may vary as the job evolves without affecting the nature of the duties or the responsibility level.
Teaching and Learning
  • Plan appropriate, effective and inclusive learning programmes through schemes of work that promote equality and engage with diversity
  • Plan teaching sessions which accommodate individualised learning using a variety of resources, including digital learning (lesson planning)
  • Ensure all learning materials are available on the VLE for students to access and engage with
  • Apply the principles of learning to provide learning activities to meet curriculum requirements and the needs of all students
  • Select the relevant learning approaches and skill development to ensure students’ progress
  • Contribute to the provision of a stimulating learning environment whilst adhering to the Centres’ Health and Safety procedures
Assessment
  • Apply the theories and principles of assessment including initial, diagnostic, formative and summative assessment
  • Use a variety of methods to check learning in lessons (formative assessment)
  • Ensure that interactive assessment activities are available to students through the VLE
  • Provide regular and timely feedback to students to enable them to improve and achieve their qualifications
  • Prepare students for summative assessment whether for an exam, course work or assignments etc.
  • Engage in moderation of assessment materials and student work
Progress Support
  • Maintain up to date and accurate records of student attendance and progress
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to lapses in student attendance, punctuality, behaviour and application to their studies by individual conversations with students, referrals to personal tutors or where appropriate, senior management.
  • Support students with individual target setting and revise these throughout the year during progress checks
  • Support student with action planning to improve academic performance and achieve aspirational targets
  • Be available to offer support to students as required (eg workshops, booster and revision classes)
  • Support students to progress to the University by being proactive in liaising with University Schools and link tutors
  • Contribute to student progress reports in a clear and constructive manner
  • Strive for and attain high levels of student achievement
Learning and Welfare Support
  • Refer students for learning support where appropriate
  • Take responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of students in your care. Refer to support services where appropriate.
  • Contribute to effective communication with stakeholders (parents, sponsors, University etc.)
Personal Learning and Development
  • Be aware of and comply with all Centre quality assurance processes such as observation of teaching and learning, audits of teaching and learning material (including VLE content) programme and module evaluation and subject team performance reviews
  • Demonstrate and update subject specialist knowledge to ensure the currency of specialist teaching
  • Convey enthusiasm for personal specialist area to staff and students
  • Engage in professional development to improve teaching and learning practice, and update subject specialist knowledge
  • Undertake reflection and self-evaluation of personal teaching practice and continuing professional development
  • Comply with expectations of professional conduct
  • Use student feedback to improve personal performance
Team working
  • Lead the ESC team to produce and develop an exciting curriculum for students
  • Be part of the Centre Management Team
  • Be prepared to operate on a flexible basis to meet the needs of the Engineering Team and the Centre as a whole
  • Be available to cover lessons for absent colleagues as required
  • Prepare for and participate in appropriate Centre events (e.g. induction activity, enrichment, Progression week, University school events, award ceremonies etc.)
  • Promote a cohesive work ethic within the Engineering Team and the Centre as a whole
  • Share best practice and contribute to the Engineering Teams’ bank of effective resources/ideas/activities for Teaching, Learning and Assessment
  • Chair team meetings in accordance with the Centre’s meeting schedule and attend other relevant Centre meetings.

  • Other related activities as may be reasonably requested by the Director of Campus Operations.
ABOUT YOU
Essential
  • A Cert Ed, PCET or PGCE teaching qualification (working towards, or willingness to achieve)
  • Qualified to Degree level or professional equivalent in a relevant subject area
Desirable
  • Postgraduate qualification in a related field
  • Successful teaching, learning and assessment experience at level 3
  • Current experience in the delivery of Engineering Science and Computing teaching and learning
  • Experience of teaching International Students
  • Experience in planning and running complex education courses in the subject area
  • Experience in coordinating a small team to achieve high levels of student academic performance and outcomes against agreed targets.
