Over the last decade, mental health has become a major social cause, with Mind leading significant change. Our ambitions are to strengthen our impact through strategic objectives focused on becoming an anti-racist organization, supporting young people (especially trauma), and fighting for the mental health of people in poverty. These interconnected challenges require urgent attention.


Role Overview

This senior leadership role is pivotal in realizing our ambitions. Reporting to the Executive Director of Social Change, the Head of Strategic Communications and Marketing will provide strategic leadership, driving an insight-led, integrated approach across all communications disciplines in England and Wales.

Key duties and responsibilities
  • Provide overall strategic leadership for Mind's communications and marketing efforts across England and Wales.
  • Develop effective relationships within Mind, with Retail, Local Minds, and external stakeholders to foster cooperation and adaptability.
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of a federation-wide communications strategy, including narrative and stakeholder plans.
  • Lead supporter engagement initiatives, transforming supporter interactions, and developing participatory communities aligned with our priorities.
  • Ensure our membership approach meets governance standards.
  • Manage awareness campaigns, including Time to Talk Day, ensuring strategic support across Mind and partners.
  • Collaborate on partnerships and organizational change from a communications perspective.
  • Build external communication contacts and influence on complex issues, including ethical considerations and reputation management.
  • Act as a thought leader, providing expertise on strategic communications, internal and external messaging, and risk management.
  • Contribute to crisis management and organizational decision-making.
  • Lead cross-organizational projects, ensuring performance and delivery.
  • Utilize and embed communication evidence, insights, and evaluation metrics to improve engagement and branding.
  • Implement and monitor audience strategies and segmentation collaboratively across functions.
  • Ensure work is trauma-informed and reflects the views of people with lived experience of mental health issues.
  • Engage diverse groups, including racialized communities, youth, and those in poverty.
  • Oversee integrated communications planning and manage the departmental budget.
  • Support Mind’s leadership team in developing and executing the communications strategy.
  • Deputize for the Executive Director of Social Change when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate to the role.
