Head of SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality)

Location: Rugby - travel across clients sites in the North of the UK

Salary: A£50,000 - A£90,000 + car allowance

Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent - 40 hours per week

Are you an experienced SHEQ leader with a passion for driving safety culture and environmental excellence? We're looking for a dynamic and strategic Head of SHEQ to join our clients senior leadership team and lead their health, safety, and environmental initiatives across all operations.

About the Role:

As Head of SHEQ, you will be responsible for developing and managing the company's SHEQ strategy, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, and promoting a proactive safety culture. You'll lead a dedicated team and work closely with site managers and external partners to reduce risks, drive performance, and support sustainable operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership & Strategy
    Develop, implement, and monitor the SHEQ strategy across all sites.
    Lead the SHEQ team, offering clear direction, mentorship, and support.
    Drive continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental standards.
  2. Compliance & Regulation
    Ensure full compliance with UK health, safety, and environmental legislation.
    Monitor regulatory changes and advise senior management accordingly.
    Oversee environmental compliance, including waste management and permitting.
  3. Risk Management
    Conduct detailed risk assessments and implement effective control measures.
    Lead investigations into incidents and near misses, producing action plans.
    Maintain accurate safety records, including audits and training logs.
  4. Training & Development
    Design and deliver training programmes to promote a strong safety culture.
    Mentor managers and staff in best practices for health and safety.
    Encourage continuous improvement and accountability at all levels.
  5. Performance Monitoring
    Set and track KPIs for SHEQ performance.
    Produce regular reports for the board on safety metrics, incidents, and improvements.
    Lead inspections and audits to ensure compliance and identify areas for development.
  6. Stakeholder Engagement
    Liaise with regulatory bodies such as the HSE and Environment Agency.
    Collaborate with internal teams, contractors, and partners to foster a safe work environment.

Skills & Qualifications:
  1. NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent in Occupational Health and Safety.
  2. Chartered Membership of IOSH (or working towards).
  3. Senior-level experience in SHEQ, ideally within waste management or environmental services.
  4. In-depth knowledge of UK health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  5. Proven leadership and team management experience across multiple sites.
  6. Strong communication and influencing skills.
  7. Proactive mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.

Desirable:
  1. Experience with ISO 45001 or similar systems.
  2. Environmental management qualification (e.g., IEMA).
