Head of SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality)

Location: Rugby; travel across clients' sites in the North of the UK

Salary: GBP 50,000 - GBP 90,000 + car allowance

Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent; 40 hours per week

Are you an experienced SHEQ leader passionate about driving safety culture and environmental excellence? We are seeking a dynamic and strategic Head of SHEQ to join our client's senior leadership team and lead health, safety, and environmental initiatives across all operations.

About The Role

As Head of SHEQ, you will develop and manage the company's SHEQ strategy, ensure compliance with relevant legislation, and promote a proactive safety culture. You will lead a dedicated team and collaborate closely with site managers and external partners to reduce risks, enhance performance, and support sustainable operations.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategy
Develop, implement, and monitor the SHEQ strategy across all sites.
Lead the SHEQ team, providing clear direction, mentorship, and support.
Drive continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental standards.

Compliance and Regulation
Ensure full compliance with UK health, safety, and environmental legislation.
Monitor regulatory changes and advise senior management.
Oversee environmental compliance, including waste management and permitting.

Risk Management
Conduct detailed risk assessments and implement control measures.
Lead investigations into incidents and near misses, producing action plans.
Maintain accurate safety records, including audits and training logs.

Training and Development
Design and deliver training programmes to promote a strong safety culture.
Mentor managers and staff in best practices for health and safety.
Encourage continuous improvement and accountability at all levels.

Performance Monitoring
Set and track KPIs for SHEQ performance.
Produce regular reports for the board on safety metrics, incidents, and improvements.
Lead inspections and audits to ensure compliance and identify areas for development.

Stakeholder Engagement
Liaise with regulatory bodies such as HSE and the Environment Agency.
Collaborate with internal teams, contractors, and partners to foster a safe work environment.

Skills and Qualifications
NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent in Occupational Health and Safety.
Chartered Membership of IOSH (or working towards).
Senior-level experience in SHEQ, ideally within waste management or environmental services.
In-depth knowledge of UK health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Proven leadership and team management experience across multiple sites.
Strong communication and influencing skills.
Proactive mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.

Desirable
Experience with ISO 45001 or similar systems.
Environmental management qualification (e.g., IEMA).
