What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?

• Lead criterion: You are an experienced Lead Software Engineer with significant knowledge of Software Engineering, understanding the value of this role within a Digital function.
• You are an advocate of communities of practice — can confidently articulate their value and has experience in building and leading self-sustaining professional communities.
• You possess excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills — able to build relationships at all levels, negotiate, and influence at a senior level.
• You demonstrate leadership by fostering a culture that stays current with emerging trends and promotes best practices across the community.
• You have experience in coaching, mentoring, peer reviews, and creating development opportunities.
• You have experience designing and leading recruitment strategies involving multiple campaigns and community engagement.

Your role

As a Head of Role for Software Engineering, you will be an expert and role model in software craft.

You will lead design, development, and support of software products, driving consistency, standards, and quality, resolving technical blockers, and promoting collaboration.

You will define strategy and standards for our Engineering community and lead adoption of best practices. You will represent DWP and Engineering in wider forums.

The role involves both strategic leadership and hands-on involvement when necessary.

Location: Join us in one of our digital hubs in Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, or Sheffield.

Hybrid working: Flexible working arrangements with some time in the office and some at home.

Pay: Up to £89,995.

Pension: Civil service pension with employer contributions up to 28.97%, approximately £22,521/year.

Holidays: Starting at 26 days, rising to 31 days, plus public holidays and up to 3 extra days off per month on flexi-time.
