Job description

5 days ago Be among the first 25 applicants

Since inception in 2010, Silverstream Technologies has pioneered the commercial development of Air Lubrication (ALS) within the maritime industry. This technology reduces the impact of frictional resistance between the bottom surfaces of a ship’s hull and the water. As fuel costs increase with the introduction of green fuels, the Silverstream System will become increasingly relevant for ship owners and operators, offering a strong economic return on investment.

Following the success of the prototype solution in 2014 and consequent commercial deployments, Silverstream has experienced significant growth over the last five years. Today we have c.140 people focused purely on ALS across London, Shanghai and Southampton. We are both proud to be the industry leader and proud of our continuing contribution to supporting the maritime sector’s decarbonisation ambitions.

The New Role – Head of Regulatory Affairs

We recognise that we need to have stronger representation among our peer groups and governing bodies, including the International Maritime Organization and we have created a new part-time consultancy role, Head of Regulatory Affairs, which will form part of the Senior Leadership team working closely with the CEO and Chief Commercial Officer.

The Head of Regulatory Affairs will play a significant role in promoting the maturity and relevance of our technology within influencing and governing bodies including trade associations such as the International Chamber of Shipping, BIMCO, SIGTTO and others. They will be also an active participant and commentator in leading maritime industry forums. Lobbying through Government bodies will also fall within the scope of the role.

This part time role will be based out of our London office with extensive travel required, although presence in Europe will also be workable, engaging under a consultancy capacity.

Example Accountabilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on global and regional shipping regulations (IMO, EU, China), focusing on ALS deployment for operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Silverstream stakeholders to align performance objectives with regulatory themes.
  • Translate regulations into actionable insights for Silverstream and its customers, impacting R&D and investment strategies.
  • Possess expert knowledge of industry regulatory bodies (IMO, EU) and understand regulation development, roll out and enforcement.
  • Manage multiple issues, interpret complex documents, identify value areas, and recommend advocacy positions.
  • Assess financial, strategic and reputational impacts of industry issues and policy directions.

What You Will Need To Succeed

  • A wide reaching and relevant maritime/shipping/maritime regulation network, formed through a successful career in the commercial shipping sector or maritime regulation sector.
  • Ability to open doors with panache acting as an Ambassador for Silverstream.
  • A full and deep understanding of maritime regulations and decarbonisation strategies in the international commercial shipping sector.
  • Examples of success in previous lobbying activity, ideally related to sustainability initiatives.
  • An academic mindset proven through your academic achievements.
  • The capacity to work with Silverstream for around 8 days per month, over a long period.

What Legacy Could You Create?

Working with the ALS industry leader, this position offers the opportunity to play a key role in ensuring that air-lubrication-technology is a recognised technology under existing and evolving regulatory frameworks.

Further, there is freedom and potential to build an alliance of like-minded industry peers, convening and guiding the conversations that will accelerate the take up of air lubrication technology in support of global shipping environmental ambitions.
