Job description
Overview

Lead the Radiotherapy Physics team within the Department of Medical Physics at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. The Cancer Centre includes Varian ETHOS, TrueBeams, Halcyon and associated imaging and planning capabilities across Guildford and the satellite Redhill site. The service provides radiotherapy treatment planning, dosimetry, equipment maintenance and quality assurance, and brachytherapy, with opportunities for clinical development, research and staff education.

Responsibilities
  • Manage all aspects of the Radiotherapy Physics service to provide a high quality specialist service ensuring the accuracy and safety of radiotherapy/brachytherapy delivery.
  • Lead and/or support clinical development and research and oversee education and training of staff and students.
  • Provide expert advice to Medical Physics, Radiotherapy and the Trust to comply with regulatory and statutory requirements relevant to Radiotherapy.
  • Ensure delivery of radiotherapy treatment planning, radiation dosimetry, equipment maintenance and quality assurance, including brachytherapy.
  • Occasional attendance at the satellite centre; flexible working to accommodate clinical need within 08:00–20:00 hours; bank holiday/weekend work as required.
Location and timetable

Based at Guildford with occasional attendance at the satellite centre in East Surrey Hospital, Redhill. Access to transport links and local amenities available; attendance at the satellite centre will be required on occasion.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Good B.Sc.(Hons) degree
  • MSc in Medical Physics (or related subject)
  • HCPC registered Clinical Scientist
  • RPA2000 registered Medical Physics Expert under IR(ME)R in Radiotherapy
  • Registration as a Higher Specialist Scientist, or equivalent level of knowledge and experience of acting as a Consultant Clinical Scientist

Desirable

  • PhD in Radiotherapy Physics, or equivalent scientific experience
Knowledge
  • Extensive up-to-date experience and advanced knowledge in at least one area: treatment planning, dosimetry or brachytherapy
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of radiotherapy physics and ionizing radiation
  • Knowledge of clinical issues and implications for radiotherapy physics practices
  • Experience of project management and budget management
  • Corporate Member of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (or equivalent)
  • Registered for Continuing Professional Development
