Overview

The Radiation Protection Service at Velindre Cancer Centre (RPS Cardiff) delivers a range of ionising radiation protection services to customers primarily in South East Wales, including Aneurin Bevan, Cardiff & Vale, Cwm Taff, and Powys Health Boards, Public Health Wales at all sites across Wales, local universities, the private healthcare sector, and Velindre University NHS Trust. Services include statutory roles of Radiation Protection Adviser (Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017), Medical Physics Expert for diagnostic radiology (Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017), and Radioactive Waste Adviser (Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016). The team comprises clinical scientists, clinical technologists, and administrative staff.

  • Develop services for the customer base in response to changes in the legislative environment and developments in diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiotherapy.
  • Act as budget holder for the Radiation Protection Service.
  • Act in at least two of the statutory roles noted above.
  • Initiate research and development and take a leading role in teaching and training of staff and students.
