Job summary

HMS is seeking an exceptional Head of Planned Projects to steer a major operations portfolio with a turnover in the £30m–£35m range and a large, skilled workforce. You will drive strategic direction across maintenance, capital projects, and energy efficiency, ensuring safe, efficient delivery and strong customer satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Significant senior leadership experience within planned maintenance is essential.
  • Proven experience managing large operational teams and complex service delivery functions.
  • Strong commercial and financial management experience.
  • Experience delivering large-scale planned investment or maintenance programmes.
  • Demonstrable ability to lead change, transformation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with experience influencing at senior and executive level.
  • Strong understanding of governance, compliance, risk management and health & safety requirements.
  • Leadership or management qualification, or equivalent senior leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of the Planned Projects and Maintenance strategy in line with the HMS Business Plan.
  • Drive operational transformation and continuous improvement across all planned works activities.
  • Support business growth by identifying and developing new commercial opportunities.
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of HMS as a member of the senior leadership team.
  • Ensure HMS remains a contractor of choice for both Group and third-party clients.
  • Oversee the delivery of all planned projects and maintenance operations.
  • Ensure services are delivered safely, efficiently, compliantly and within budget.
  • Monitor operational performance, productivity and financial targets.
  • Lead contract and project performance across multiple workstreams.
  • Drive quality standards and customer satisfaction across all areas of responsibility.
  • Develop and implement effective systems, processes and governance arrangements.
  • Take overall responsibility for budgets, financial forecasting and commercial performance.
  • Deliver agreed business plan targets and surplus expectations.
  • Monitor financial performance and identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
  • Ensure robust financial governance and compliance with company standing orders and regulations.
  • Lead a positive health and safety culture across all operations.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations and technical standards.
  • Maintain oversight of statutory requirements, inspections and accreditations.
  • Manage operational risk through effective governance, controls and assurance frameworks.
  • Lead, inspire and develop a large operational workforce.
  • Build a high-performing, customer-focused culture.
  • Coach and mentor managers, supporting talent development and succession planning.

Job description

HMS is looking for an exceptional and commercially focused Head of Planned Projects to lead one of the most significant

operational areas of our business. This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for a turnover of approximately £30m–£35m,

leading a team of around 200–250 colleagues across a diverse portfolio of planned investment, maintenance and construction

activities. If you are an experienced construction or maintenance leader with a proven track record of delivering large-scale

programmes, driving operational excellence and leading high-performing teams, we'd love to hear from you.

As Head of Planned Projects, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across a broad range of workstreams, including:

  • Planned and Cyclical Maintenance Programmes
  • Capital Investment Projects
  • Mechanical & Electrical Installations
  • Planned Maintenance Services
  • Aids & Adaptations
  • Retrofit, Sustainability and Energy Efficiency Programmes

Working closely with the Operations Director, Senior Leadership Team and key stakeholders, you will shape and deliver the future

direction of planned works services, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, profitably and to the highest standards

of quality and customer satisfaction.

What You Will Be Doing:

What We're Looking For:

  • Relevant construction, business or leadership qualification at Level 5 or above (or working towards).
  • Commitment to continuing professional development.
  • Commitment to achieving or holding an appropriate Health & Safety qualification, such as IOSH Directing Safely.
Interview Process:

The interview process will consist of two stages:

  • Stage 1 will take place on Thursday 20th August at our Stonebridge Office and will comprise a competency-based interview and a presentation. The presentation brief will be provided upon invitation to interview.
  • Candidates who are successful at Stage 1 and invited to progress to Stage 2 will be required to complete an Insights Assessment prior to their second interview.
  • Stage 2 will consist of further competency-based interview questions, together with a discussion of the candidate's Insights Assessment report and any questions arising from it. Stage 2 interviews will take place during the week commencing 31st August
