About the role: As Head of Department, you will:

  • Provide leadership and management of the PE department to secure high-quality teaching, effective use of resources, and improved standards of learning and achievement for all students.

Key roles and responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement policies and practices that reflect the school’s commitment to high achievement, effective teaching, and learning.
  • Create a positive climate that enables staff to develop and maintain positive attitudes towards PE and confidence in teaching it.
  • Seek opportunities to be an innovative department leader through curriculum design and implementation.
  • Use data effectively to identify underachieving pupils and create support plans.
  • Establish plans for the development and resourcing of the PE department.
  • Monitor progress towards department goals and evaluate their impact on teaching and learning.
  • Be responsible for pupil outcomes in PE.

Teaching & Learning:

  • Ensure curriculum coverage, continuity, and progression for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and English as an additional language.
  • Clarify teaching objectives and communicate them to pupils.
  • Guide on appropriate teaching methods for diverse needs.
  • Implement assessment and reporting policies to track progress and set targets.
  • Set and monitor standards for staff and pupils.
  • Evaluate teaching quality and implement improvements.
  • Develop pupils’ study skills and foster parental involvement.
  • Build links with the local community and industry to enhance the curriculum.
  • Develop outstanding teaching resources and monitor pedagogy quality.
  • Provide ongoing CPD for the department.
