Head of Physical Education

Salary: £40,321 - £53,994 plus TLR of £5,855 and a generous benefits package

About the Department

The Physical Education department provides a dynamic, innovative, and supportive environment where engaging and varied lessons enable students to realize their potential. Students use sports to enhance their well-being and as an active outlet from classroom lessons. The department currently has three staff members whom you would be responsible for managing.

Physical Education is popular among students from Year 7 and remains a favored GCSE option. The school's sports facilities are excellent and support learning effectively.

Job Description

Heads of Department are key leaders within the school, carrying significant leadership and management responsibilities. They support the school's vision and ethos. Responsibilities include teaching and learning, departmental vision, strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, behavior management, resources, and the learning environment.

Key Tasks
  1. Creating a curriculum that inspires students to become effective lifelong learners
  2. Ensuring high standards of teaching and learning for all students
  3. Developing a curriculum vision and strategic plan
  4. Creating Schemes of Learning to enable effective learning
  5. Producing a three-year strategic plan supported by an annual action plan
  6. Conducting an annual self-review of the department, analyzing student performance, and updating the strategic plan accordingly
  7. Contributing to course selection discussions and implementation
  8. Collaborating with primary schools to ensure smooth transition for new students
  9. Monitoring and evaluating teaching quality, assessment, differentiation, and classroom management

To motivate and support staff within the department:

  1. Communicate a clear department vision fostering ownership and team spirit
  2. Line manage and develop staff effectively
  3. Hold regular meetings with line managers and keep them informed

To ensure a safe and supportive learning environment:

  1. Prioritize student well-being and safety
  2. Support the school's ethos in assemblies and activities
  3. Maintain high standards of student behavior
  4. Maintain effective communication with parents regarding progress and behavior

To set challenging targets and support staff and students in achieving them:

  1. Develop assessment systems to identify and address underachievement
  2. Coordinate intervention strategies for student progress
  3. Identify and share best practices through observations and collaborative planning
