Head of Marketing, Communications & Development

Salary: Highly competitive, dependent on experience and skills + Benefits

Hours: Full-time, permanent (37 hours per week).

Based at Ampleforth Abbey YO62 - minimum 2 days per week based on site

Closing date: Friday 2nd May 2025

About Ampleforth Abbey

Located in the Howardian Hills near York, the Abbey sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and welcomes thousands of visitors each year to its Retreat Centre, Visitor Centre, Shop and Tea Room.

Ampleforth Abbey Trust, a registered charity, works alongside the monastic community to support this mission. With around 60 lay staff, the Trust delivers on a five-year strategy, Choosing a Future Together, to ensure a sustainable, faith-led future for the Abbey and its valley home.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Develop and deliver joined-up marketing, communications, and fundraising strategies to support the Trust's aims.
  2. Use market research and audience insight to shape messaging, campaigns, and engagement.
  3. Lead and support a small, motivated team; foster teamwork and continuous development.
  4. Create and manage marketing campaigns across digital, print, events and social media.
  5. Oversee brand, content and collateral production, ensuring consistent and engaging messaging.
  6. Coordinate with Ampleforth College's Marketing and Development teams.
  7. Manage relationships with external consultants and agencies for both marketing and fundraising.
  8. Identify and cultivate donor and supporter relationships, from major gifts to regular giving and legacies.
  9. Track campaign and fundraising performance, using data to inform and improve future activity.
  10. Oversee budgets for marketing, communications and development, ensuring resources are used effectively.
  11. Build and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders locally and nationally.
  12. Represent the Abbey and Trust as an ambassador at relevant events and meetings.

Experience

You will have:

  1. A strong track record in marketing, communications or development at a strategic level
  2. Experience in faith-based, cultural, charitable, educational or visitor-based organisations
  3. Proven leadership experience, including managing teams and delivering results
  4. Confidence in budget management and using insight and data to guide decision-making
  5. Familiarity with both digital and traditional marketing channels
  6. Success in developing and growing supporter or donor engagement
