Job description

Head of Market Strategy & Investment

Our Commercial team has a need for a Head of Market Strategy & Investment on a permanent basis. This role will be based in Newbridge and will report to the Head of Commercial. The successful candidate will be responsible for the commercial development and route to market of our energy generation portfolio, crafting compelling business cases, and forging partnerships that drive growth and enhance the competitive position of our renewable energy business.

This role requires a blend of strategic thinking, market analysis, relationship management, and a deep understanding of the renewable energy landscape.

This role must have excellent commercial and financial engineering skills to take initial business cases for a range of renewable energy technologies and public good projects to a Financial Investment decision.
This role must be able to build and maintain key relationships with partners and customers and as well as with BnM’s key internal and external stakeholders.
This role must have excellent commercial acumen and significant experience in negotiating and managing large commercial contracts and have strong management and leadership experience.
This role will work closely with technical teams as well as with the Finance & Treasury functions to bring projects out to Financial Investment Decision.

The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:

  1. Drive the commercial development and route to market formulation for a portfolio of technologies including wind, solar, thermal & flextech as well as other inter-related public good projects within BnM. Lead out a commercial/financial modelling team, creating and interpreting complex financial projections, cash flow analyses, and investment appraisal techniques ensuring that financial models are streamlined and can be adapted for the purpose of securing external financing where necessary.
  2. Lead the creation of robust business cases for new initiatives and projects, including financial modelling and risk assessment from early stage projects out to Financial Investment Decision. Evaluate the viability and potential return on investment for new market opportunities. Present business cases to senior leadership and stakeholders, advocating for strategic initiatives where appropriate.
  3. Identify and engage with potential partners, including utilities, government agencies, and private sector organizations to establish collaborative opportunities. Negotiate and manage partnership agreements to ensure mutual benefits and alignment with business objectives. Maintain strong relationships with existing partners to foster collaboration and drive joint initiatives.
  4. Lead regular market assessments to inform strategic decisions and identify emerging trends in the renewable energy sector. Lead team responsible for development of comprehensive market reports highlighting market insights, competitive analysis, and performance metrics. Identify and prioritize commercial opportunities relating to the BnM landbank that can capitalize on future opportunities.
  5. Lead and engage with key stakeholders such as EirGrid, CRU and Government departments as well as other industry players that can help commercialise our projects.
  6. Liaise and work internally with the wider BnM Finance and Engineering teams to ensure robust investment cases for the business. Mentor and develop a team of business development professionals, fostering a culture of innovation and high performance. Lead cross-departmental projects and initiatives to drive alignment and achieve business goals. Ability to collaborate with finance teams to update the long term financial and strategic plan for the Company and ensure coordinated efforts in achieving business objectives.
  7. All employees are expected to cooperate fully with all provisions taken by the company for ensuring Health and Safety, and Welfare of co-employees and member of the public using the premises.
  8. Proactively participate in the Performance Management process to ensure delivery of own, and the wider team’s objectives.

The Person:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualification, skills, knowledge and attributes:

  1. Hons Degree in Commercial, Finance, Energy or Engineering Fields required.
  2. Post Graduate qualification in a relevant discipline, (e.g. Commercial, Engineering, Energy, Financial) would be an advantage for this role.
  3. Business Development and Commercial or Financial Experience desirable.
  4. Minimum 10 years of experience in business development, finance, strategic planning, or related roles within the renewable energy sector.
  5. Experience in evaluating project financial viability and financial investment decision making for renewable energy projects.
  6. Significant experience in leading engagements with customers and in driving business change.
  7. Experience in Power industry and infrastructure development.
  8. Programme management experience across a range of projects with differing priorities, risk profiles and timelines.
  9. Proven track record of developing successful go-to-market strategies and business cases.
    Extensive experience in partnership management and stakeholder engagement.
