Chair at Bi Pride UK, Corporate Volunteering Officer at Community Southwark, MSc Voluntary Sector Management student at Bayes

Ideal time commitment:approx. 10 hours per month; flexible

Responsible to:the Legal Trustee

Bi Pride UK’s mission is to create spaces where people who experience attraction beyond gender can be freely visible and celebrate themselves and their identities. It’s not enough to be ‘welcome’ at Pride. We make up a very large proportion of the queer community – the 2021 Census actually shows we’re half of the community – andwe deserve to be visible and celebrated in our own right.

There are many ways to make this happen, and we work in many ways to bring this change about:

  • Outreach work with other Prides, LGBTQ+ organisations and bi organisations– our consultation work with local Prides, the UK Pride Organisers Network and local and national LGBTQ+ organisations works in a tailored way to make sure that bi-inclusion is a top priority and is being done well
  • Organising a high-profile annual Bi Pride event– from September 2019, Bi Pride UK made history with the largest ever gathering of bi people recorded. A performance stage, a panel stage, stall village, street food, and over 1,300 attendees. After going virtual with the BiFi Festival for 2020 due to Covid-19 and running a virtual Pride event in 2021, we came back in person in 2022 with a hybrid event, and have been running the event in this format ever since
  • Building a strong online and virtual community– just as important as the rest of our work is making sure that people hear about it! People need to know what resources and spaces exist for them, and how they can connect with other people like them

The role:

We are seeking a volunteer to act as the Head of Legal, working with our Legal Trustee and Heads of other departments to ensure effective oversight of cross-organisational legal matters, and therefore enable the charity to deliver its vital work raising visibility and awareness of people attracted to more than one gender.

The Head of Legal will have an organisation-wide perspective of Bi Pride UK’s work, supporting teams to navigate legal documents and relationships confidently. Key relationships within the organisation include the Events team, the Fundraising team, the Finance team, the IT and Operations team, and the Organisational Development team. The focus of the role will be on producing or reviewing contracts for event vendors, contributors, venues, sponsors and funders, including potential negotiations on terms, reviewing internal policies, and offering ad hoc advice or guidance on legal and risk management issues. Bi Pride UK’s Trustee Board takes ultimate accountability for the charity, supported by our Legal Trustee, and the Head of Legal will help to strengthen this area.

The Head of Legal will be responsible for leading the direction of this area of work, identifying, recruiting and managing volunteers who can support in different areas. Their first priority will be to begin to build a team of volunteers to support with legal activities, supported by Bi Pride UK’s Volunteer Management team, including a Contracts Manager, an HR Manager, a Risk Manager and potentially other roles as they become apparent.

Day-to-day responsibilities of the Head of Legal will include:

  • Working with the Volunteer Management team to recruit supporting volunteers into the Legal team;
  • Building cross-organisational relationships with other teams to ensure strong legal oversight;
  • Determining workflows and timelines for the operational year for each team’s legal support needs;
  • Overseeing and maintaining a library of template documents such as contracts, policies and risk assessments;
  • Producing/overseeing the drafting of contracts and other documents as required;
  • Supporting the Organisational Development team to maintain a system of annual review of internal policies;
  • Supporting the Legal Trustee as a sounding board around legal implications of topics which may arise.

Our team volunteers remotely from anywhere in the UK, with some travel required occasionally (primarily for our flagship Pride event in London). Our Trustees and Heads meetings take place via conference call on the third Monday evening of every month. All reasonable expenses incurred are reimbursed, including travel, lunch at away days and other all day events, and some childcare costs if required.

  • Interest and passion for tackling discrimination against and improving the visibility of people in the UK attracted to more than one gender;
  • An understanding of the needs of people and communities in the UK attracted beyond gender;
  • Commitment to the aims and objectives of Bi Pride UK;
  • Some legal training or equivalent experience (e.g. law degree, work experience, drafting and negotiating contracts) and interest in charity law, though a formal legal qualification is not required;
  • Strong project management, organisational and administrative skills;
  • Strong experience of developing collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities at once;
  • Ability to self-motivate when working remotely;
  • Very strong written and oral communication skills.

The position is open to anyone over the age of 18. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, especially minority groups such as applicants of colour, trans and non-binary applicants, and disabled and neurodivergent applicants. Bi Pride UK is aware of the barriers that can be faced in gaining traditional work experience, particularly for global majority, disabled and neurodivergent, and trans people. We will give weight to this and encourage people when applying to consider caring responsibilities, including parenthood, volunteering, and other non-paid experiences and responsibilities when making their application.
