Job summary

The University of Birmingham seeks an exceptional leader to head Learning Environments, AV Services. The role oversees 300+ teaching spaces, a budget in excess of £1 million per year, and a team of over 30 professionals.

You will shape strategy, standards, and delivery to enhance the learning experience across the university. As Assistant Director, Learning Environments, you will drive innovation in learning tech, space design, and operations, ensuring inclusive, high-quality spaces for students

Qualifications

• Degree-level education in a relevant field such as Audio-Visual Technology, Music Technology, Broadcast Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Educational Technology, or equivalent; or substantial practical experience.
• Full, clean driving licence required to support operational needs.
• Experience leading AV/learning space services at a senior level.
• Ability to manage budget and stakeholder relationships at scale.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and implementation of a comprehensive service design and AV strategy across all spaces.
• Provide expert leadership on learning space design and capital projects.
• Oversee immersive and emerging learning technologies adoption and strategy.
• Develop standards, policies, and governance for AV and space services.
• Prepare reports and briefings for senior leadership and governance bodies.
• Lead a diverse team of AV/Media Technologists and space designers.
• Drive evaluation, continuous improvement, and data-informed decision making.
• Engage with internal and external stakeholders to align services with strategic goals.
