Professional development is a central part of our school culture, and we are committed to helping every member of our team grow and thrive.

The Role

We are seeking an exceptional Head of History & Religious Studies (RS) to join our dedicated team. This unique and exciting leadership role combines two important areas of the curriculum—History and RS (taught alongside PSHCE at KS3)—offering the right candidate the opportunity to shape both academic and spiritual learning across the school.

The successful candidate will:

· Lead and develop the History and RS departments, managing curriculum delivery, assessment, and progression across Key Stages 3 and 4.

· Inspire, motivate, and support students in both subjects to achieve their full potential.

· Contribute to the wider spiritual and moral development of students across the school.

· Be a key member of the middle leadership team, working collaboratively to maintain and further develop our high standards.

Key Responsibilities

· Leadership and Management: Provide strategic leadership of the History and RS departments, overseeing curriculum development, teaching standards, and resource allocation to ensure high-quality education.

· Curriculum Development: Design and implement a comprehensive History and RS curriculum fostering critical thinking and historical and RS inquiry. Promote cross-curricular and whole-school initiatives related to spiritual, moral, and cultural development.

· Teaching Excellence: Deliver engaging and challenging History and RS lessons to students from Years 7 to 11, ensuring excellence in academic outcomes across all levels.

· Assessment and Evaluation: Develop and administer assessments that accurately measure student progress, providing constructive feedback to support individual learning needs and preparing students for top examination performance.

· Professional Development: Mentor and support History and RS teachers, facilitating professional growth and promoting best practices within the departments.

· Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues across departments to promote interdisciplinary learning and contribute to the school’s academic initiatives.

· Student Engagement: Encourage student participation in extracurricular activities related to History and RS, such as clubs, competitions, and field trips.

· Quality Assurance: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the History and RS curriculums and teaching methods, implementing improvements as necessary to maintain the highest standards. Monitor and track student progress, intervening effectively to raise attainment.

· Love of Learning Foster a classroom culture of curiosity, respect, and resilience.

Person Specification

· Educational Background: Have Qualified Teacher Status. A degree in History and/or Religious Studies, with a strong academic track record

· Proven Academic Excellence: Experience of teaching History and/or Religious Studies at GCSE level with a history of securing good academic outcomes, including high proportions of students achieving top grades.

· Analytical Insight: The ability to articulate what drives excellent progress and performance in History and RS’s examination specifications, providing a clear vision for academic success.

· Experience in Academic Environments: A minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience in a fast-paced, academically ambitious school

· Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead and manage both the History and RS departments, with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

· Innovative Teaching: A passion for teaching and the ability to inspire students through creative and engaging lessons.

· Assessment Expertise: Experience in developing and implementing effective assessment strategies to monitor and enhance student learning.

· Commitment to Growth: A proactive approach to personal and professional development, staying updated on advancements in History and RS education.

· Collaborative Mindset: A collaborative approach to working with colleagues, students, and the wider school community.
