Working out of the Durrington Head Office and in the field, you will lead the way in establishing and maintaining the highest Health, Safety and Wellbeing standards.

As the Head of HSQE, you will bring ideas, passion and energy, and have the ability to inspire and guide your team of Health & Safety Advisors and Business Systems and Compliance Manager to succeed in delivering quality advice, guidance and coaching, measured by key metrics and standards.

Position: Head of Health, Safety, Quality & Environment

Location: based out of Durrington Head Office (Worthing, West Sussex), plus travel around our network including Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and Isle of Wight

Job Type: permanent, full-time

Hours: Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, plus Senior Leadership Team on-call rota

Salary: Competitive, depending upon experience (plus car allowance)

About The Role

Due to continued growth and development, we are now looking for safety conscious people to join us in our Utility Division, working on our Southern Water contract service to deliver real and effective solutions to health and safety issues.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and management in all Health & Safety (H&S) matters to support the achievement of company objectives.
  • Oversee the implementation and management of H&S policies, ensuring a safe working environment across all operational areas.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives and best practices to enhance workplace safety.
  • Support the implementation and compliance of the Business Management System (BMS) in line with industry standards and regulations.

Compliance, Auditing & Risk Management

  • Monitor and oversee Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), Risk & Opportunity (R&O) assessments, Fire Safety & First Aid audits to ensure workplace safety.
  • Ensure all workplace audits and inspections are conducted effectively, with corrective actions implemented as required.
  • Investigate all Health & Safety incidents, ensuring thorough reporting, root cause analysis, and corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Keep up to date with legislative and regulatory requirements, ensuring policies and procedures reflect any necessary changes.

Stakeholder Engagement & Reporting

  • Maintain strong communication and relationships with internal teams, regulatory bodies, and key stakeholders.
  • Represent the company in Risk Management (RM) and industry-related forums and meetings.
  • Prepare and present monthly H&S performance reports, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  • Oversee and monitor random Drug & Alcohol (D&A) testing across all regions, ensuring compliance.

Training, Awareness & Safety Culture

  • Oversee the delivery of safety communications via multiple channels, including on-call updates and safety briefings.
  • Organise and dispatch monthly Toolbox Talks (TBTs) and assign training courses to reinforce safety awareness.
  • Analyse Health & Safety trends, identify risks, and develop strategies for continuous improvement.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by leading training sessions, awareness campaigns, and employee engagement initiatives.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide expert Health & Safety guidance to senior management and operational teams.
  • Support business-wide risk assessments, emergency preparedness plans, and compliance initiatives.
  • Undertake any other H&S-related tasks or projects as directed by management.
  • Ensure full compliance with all company policies and uphold the highest professional and ethical standards.
  • Any other ad-hoc tasks or projects on behalf of the Senior Leadership Team or COO of Regulated Water and Utilities (South).
  • Be aware of all Lanes Group policies and your responsibilities towards them.

Being proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and strong attention to detail is imperative. Adaptability, flexibility and resilience is key.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Health and Safety Diploma (or equivalent) is required
  • NEBOSH NGC is desirable
  • Previous experience in a managerial role is essential
  • Experience in the drainage, utilities or retail industry will be beneficial
  • A full UK drivers licence is required to travel around our network
