Job Description:

Lincoln Cornhill is proud to be working with a reputable Local Authority in the South West who are looking to appoint an interim Head of Health & Safety for three months with the likeliness of being extended.

The organisation operates on a hybrid model with 2-3 days in the office, with flexibility of how the working hours are made up. The daily rate is negotiable, and will be paid inside IR35.

The range of duties includes (but not limited to):

  • Maintain a robust corporate Health and Safety structure, ensuring it aligns with legal standards and industry best practices.
  • Manage key health and safety risks and oversee systems to monitor and mitigate these risks effectively.
  • Act as the lead advisor and subject matter expert, providing strategic guidance across the organisation.
  • Directly line manage a team of Health and Safety Advisors, supporting their development and performance.
  • Ensure comprehensive auditing processes and clear documentation trails are in place for all H&S matters.
  • Oversee the accurate recording and investigation of all accidents, near misses, and incidents in line with corporate policy.
  • Promote and embed a strong, positive Health and Safety culture throughout the organisation.
  • Lead the implementation and integration of a new Health and Safety management system.

Skills and experience required:

  • Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) – mandatory professional qualification.
  • Extensive senior level experience in Health and Safety leadership roles within large or complex organisations.
  • Strong knowledge and practical application of health and safety law, governance, and best practices.
  • Experience in leading teams and delivering service improvement.
  • Experience overseeing or implementing Health and Safety software systems.
  • Familiarity with local government or public sector environments is advantageous.
