Job Description:

Type: Permanent contract

35 hours per week

  • Flexible working hours: 8─4, 9─5, 10─6 or in between (to be agreed with your manager)
  • 28 days holiday per year (plus bank holidays)
  • Pension scheme: employer matches up to 8%; auto-enrollment every 2 years; opt-out available. If you opt out, you contribute 4% which will be matched to 8%.
  • Life assurance: death in service cover of 4x salary paid to nominated person.

The Children’s Society has been supporting children and young people in this country for over 140 years. We operate local services that assist children during their most vulnerable moments and in urgent need. We are dedicated to being there for children every step of the way. This role is within our Finance team and CEO office, which includes Finance, Legal, and Governance teams, providing expert leadership and advice to ensure our operations are legal, compliant, sustainable, and secure.

About the role

The Head of Financial Accounting & Finance Systems will ensure the integrity of accounting records and financial reporting. Responsibilities include leading statutory accounts preparation, year-end audits, and month-end closes. The role involves implementing strong financial controls, ensuring statutory compliance, managing and developing staff, building relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring compliance, improving processes, and strengthening financial controls. Additionally, the role oversees and ensures the effective operation of the organisation's finance systems, maintaining a proper control environment and enabling the wider team at TCS.

Skills and Competencies

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • Experience leading a finance and accounting function and overseeing effective finance systems
  • Extensive experience managing year-end audit processes
  • Ability to manage and lead a team ensuring consistent high performance
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
