Job summary

Pro Talent is seeking a Head of Finance in Reading to partner with the Managing Director and drive forward-looking financial planning. You will lead a small team, own month-end, reporting, and the annual audit, and shape the finance function as the business scales.

You'll transform Board packs with FP&A, KPIs and forward-looking insights, manage budgets and forecasts, and work with operational leaders to improve margins. A clear route to Finance Director in 12–18 months is planned.

Qualifications

• Fully qualified (ACA, ACCA or CIMA).
• Senior finance experience in an SME.
• Strong FP&A and Board reporting experience.
• Audit management experience.
• Commercial curiosity and the ability to challenge constructively.
• Sage experience is ideal; multi-site or contract-based services an advantage.

Responsibilities

• Lead the finance function from month end to audit.
• Transform the Board pack with FP&A, KPIs, trends and forward-looking insights.
• Manage budgets, rolling forecasts, scenario modelling and cash flow.
• Analyze profitability by branch, service line and contract and work with ops to improve margins.
• Oversee banking, VAT, and statutory compliance.

Head of Finance Reading £75,000 to £85,000 + bonus

Most Board packs tell you what happened last month. This business wants one that tells them what's coming next.

My client is an established, multi-site business headquartered in Reading, with regional operations across the UK. They're looking for a Head of Finance to work as the Managing Director's right hand. The plan is for the right person to step up to Finance Director within 12 to 18 months.

Why this role stands out

Today the Board pack is essentially a P&L. They want far more than that: trend analysis, real commentary, and a view on what's coming. You'll be the person who spots the issue or the opportunity early and raises it before anyone else notices. Finger on the pulse, not looking in the rear-view mirror.

It's a proper SME role too. You'll lead a small team of two to three and be close to the detail. You'll also be shaping strategy, challenging assumptions and helping a growing business make better commercial decisions.

What you'll be doing

• Leading the finance function, from month end and reporting through to the annual audit
• Transforming the Board pack with FP&A, KPIs, trends and forward-looking insight
• Budgets, rolling forecasts, scenario modelling and cash flow management
• Analysing profitability by branch, service line and contract, and working with operational leaders to improve margins
• Keeping an eye on the wider economy and market, and planning ahead for what it means
• Managing banking relationships, controls, VAT and statutory compliance
• Improving systems and processes so the numbers are quicker and more useful

What you'll bring

• Fully qualified (ACA, ACCA or CIMA)
• Senior finance experience in an SME, where you've been both hands-on and strategic
• Strong FP&A and Board reporting experience
• Audit management experience
• Genuine commercial curiosity and the confidence to challenge constructively
• Sage experience is ideal. Multi-site or contract-based services experience is a real plus

The package

• £75,000 to £85,000 basic, depending on experience
