Job description

Head of Finance/Finance Director - Four Days Per Week

Hutcheon Mearns is working exclusively with a strategically-focused organisation supporting and developing the UK's subsea sector. This organisation is the leading trade and industry development body for the UK's underwater sectors, aiming to transform the sector into one of the largest and fastest-growing industries in the country, supporting the energy transition to net zero, and creating high-value jobs, technology, and exports.

The Opportunity

The primary focus of the Finance Director is to provide financial, contractual, and legal governance and controls, and manage operational services to support the organisation's mission and goals. This is a key senior position and will be part of the strategic management group.

Key objectives for the role include:

  1. Lead on the successful delivery of all financial and legal matters relating to the organisation's delivery and operations.
  2. Provide management with robust monthly management and statutory accounts, including performance history and forecasts.
  3. Ensure controls are in place for financial management of capital and revenue expenditure, invoicing, and payments.
  4. Maintain high-quality reports on cash flow, monthly accounts, forecasts, and other information for the board, including UK Government.
  5. Oversee the annual audit process, ensuring compliance with government funding and reporting requirements.
  6. Provide timely and accurate information to the Board to meet fiduciary responsibilities.
  7. Contribute to developing business cases for new products and services supporting the organisation's goals.
  8. Support the commercial sustainability of the operating plan and delivery strategy.
  9. Ensure UK Taxation compliance and partner accounting processes.
  10. Develop relationships with funding bodies, including government and partners, on financial matters.
  11. Manage the HR function, providing line management to the HR manager and ensuring employment law compliance.
  12. Manage the Operations Manager, overseeing office activities, events, and facilities.
  13. Manage the outsourced IT function, ensuring effectiveness, uninterrupted service, and value for money.

Background and Experience:

  • Fully qualified Accountant (ACCA/CIMA/ICAS).
  • Relevant post-qualification experience in a similar role.
  • Management experience of a multi-disciplinary professional team.
  • Experience managing legal compliance, contracts, and commercial analysis.
  • Experience in both practice and industry, working with boards.
  • Knowledge of financial management in a public sector environment (desirable).
  • Knowledge of underwater business environments (desirable).
  • Proven ability to engage with stakeholders and senior management.
  • Strategically aware and action-oriented.
  • Self-starter capable of working independently.
  • Demonstrates leadership and respect among peers.
  • High integrity and discretion with sensitive information.
  • Keen attention to detail.
