Job Role: Head of English
Location: St Margaret’s Church of England Academy, Aigburth Road, Liverpool, L17 6AB

Reports to: Assistant Headteacher
Main purpose of the Role
- Hold direct responsibility for English within the Academy, including teaching English up to KS4
- Line manage and develop the English department, aiming to improve student outcomes
- Share responsibility for the Academy’s strategic direction and embed this within English
- Oversee the academic and social development of all students, especially in English
- Develop and embed an innovative English curriculum
Core Responsibilities & Tasks
- Ensure effective development and delivery of the English curriculum across the Academy
- Monitor student performance in English and strive for continual improvement
- Review and amend the subject policy annually, ensuring effective practice and progression
- Coordinate record keeping and assessments, analyzing data to enhance standards
- Support teaching colleagues and monitor the effectiveness of English teaching
- Provide CPD opportunities and support professional development
- Induct new staff into English procedures and expectations
- Manage and evaluate English resources
- Collaborate across phases and with external educational partners
- Maintain knowledge of current educational developments in English
- Promote parental and governor interest in English
Strategic and Operational Planning
- Promote the Academy’s inclusive, Christian values and community role
- Implement the Development Plan and meet strategic targets
- Utilize environmentally sound technology in all aspects of work
- Lead the development of syllabuses, resources, and teaching strategies for English
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and deploy staff and resources within the English department
- Lead curriculum development and high-quality teaching in English
- Produce performance reports for senior leadership
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the English curriculum and teaching
- Ensure high standards of behavior and achievement in English
- Identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to enhance student achievement
- Assist with reports and communication with parents
- Use data to identify at-risk students and implement interventions
- Develop links with partner schools and promote English externally
Teaching & Learning
- Use diverse teaching strategies to deliver engaging lessons
- Plan lessons aligned with Schemes for Learning
- Communicate learning objectives clearly
- Adapt teaching to individual learner needs
- Utilize resources and support staff effectively
- Participate in Quality Assurance processes
- Maintain a positive learning environment and adhere to behavior policies
- Evaluate student progress regularly and provide feedback
- Engage in professional development to improve teaching quality
