Job summary

STRABAG UK is seeking an experienced Head of Engineering to lead the Power & Distribution team in delivering high voltage and extra high voltage substations for major UK infrastructure. The role acts as the technical authority on substation design, protection and control, and governance while guiding multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent is required.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Strong stakeholder and client management skills.
• Ability to make complex technical decisions and maintain technical quality across projects.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) is required.
• National Grid project experience.
• CDAE authorisation and experience.
• Health & Safety qualifications such as IOSH or NEBOSH.
• Construction and commissioning support experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership for HV/EHV primary and secondary substation engineering.
• Oversee design quality, engineering standards, compliance, and technical assurance reviews.
• Promote a culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement, and Safety by Design.
• Lead the delivery of projects through FEED, detailed design, construction support, and commissioning.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams including civil, structural, protection & control, cables systems, and commissioning disciplines.
• Act as the senior interface with clients, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders.
• Develop engineers through mentoring, competency management, recruitment, and technical coaching.
• Support bids, proposals, business development, and strategic growth initiatives.
• Drive innovation, and contribute to major grid, renewable integration, and infrastructure programmes.

About the Role:

This role is a senior engineering leadership position focused on High Voltage (HV) and Extra High Voltage (EHV) substations. The successful candidate acts as the technical authority for substation design, protection & control, engineering governance, and design assurance while leading multidisciplinary teams and supporting business growth.
