Head of Electronics & Embedded Software

Lead | Shape | Grow

We’re working with a respected and fast-growing product development consultancy in Cambridgeshire to find a dynamic and experienced Head of Electronics and Embedded Software. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and expand a critical technical function—electronics and embedded software—within a business renowned for delivering high-impact innovation in medical devices, diagnostics, drug delivery, and advanced instrumentation.

As a senior member of the leadership team, you will guide technical strategy, oversee project delivery, and develop a high-performing team. You’ll play a hands-on role in complex product development while nurturing a collaborative and inventive culture that continues to punch well above its weight.

The Company

Founded by engineers and driven by a mission to improve lives through innovation, this consultancy has quietly become a key player in complex technology development. With around 30 highly skilled engineers and scientists, they combine the agility of a small team with the reach and influence of a global player.

Their clients include fast-moving start-ups and major multinationals, and they’ve played pivotal roles in the development of breakthrough products across the healthcare and high-tech sectors. Commercially and creatively, they are outperforming many larger consultancies—while maintaining a supportive and people-focused culture.

The Role

This is a senior leadership role with real influence. You’ll be responsible for setting the direction of the electronics and embedded software capability, delivering excellent engineering, and building a team to support growing demand.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic and technical leadership for the electronics and software discipline
  • Lead and support the design and development of complex electronic and electromechanical systems, including embedded software
  • Line-manage and mentor a growing team of engineers—helping them develop professionally and technically
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality, innovative solutions across multiple client projects
  • Collaborate closely with specialists in mechanical engineering, physics, and industrial design to develop integrated systems
  • Act as a senior client-facing consultant—supporting business development, leading proposals, and shaping new project opportunities
  • Contribute to the broader direction and strategy of the consultancy as part of the senior leadership team

What You’ll Bring

  • Significant experience leading engineering teams and delivering multidisciplinary product development projects
  • A strong background in the design, prototyping, and testing of electronic systems and embedded software (C/C++)
  • Excellent understanding of the full product development lifecycle—from early concept to manufacture
  • Practical hands-on experience with electronics development (PCB rework, soldering, test equipment)
  • Confidence working with clients and motivating cross-functional teams
  • A 1st or 2:1 degree from a leading university in electronic engineering or a closely related subject
  • Experience in regulated sectors such as medical devices, diagnostics, or pharma
  • Familiarity with schematic capture, PCB layout, and design for manufacture
  • Commercial awareness and interest in contributing to business growth

Why Join?

This is a consultancy where senior engineers and technical leaders truly thrive. You’ll find:

  • A supportive and empowering culture with real work-life balance
  • A flat, collaborative structure where your voice will be heard and your ideas matter
  • The opportunity to shape and grow a core function within a successful, growing business
  • Competitive salary, strong benefits, and a company-wide bonus scheme

Most importantly, you’ll be part of a brilliant and kind team—driven by curiosity, creativity, and a shared passion for solving meaningful problems.
