Job title: Head of Digital Learning Programmes

Main purpose of job:

To lead a team and work closely with colleagues to conceive, develop and deliver high-quality digital content, projects and products as part of the learning programme, in line with the Museum’s vision, values and purpose. An ability to lead on creative ideation to grow the programme, balanced with strong planning and coordination skills, will enable you to build capacity and deliver a fresh, new approach to digital learning. While the role will work across all our learning programmes, a specific focus will be the development of a strong new digital strand for our schools’ programmes, one that works outside of Bloomsbury, in partnership with schools and regional museums to increase engagement with the collection.

Key responsibilities (in order of priority):

• To shape, grow and deliver a fresh and innovative digital learning programme, maximising the use of both internal and external knowledge and experience to strengthen the Museum’s offer, working with colleagues across the organisation.
• Develop and deliver a new strategy and plan for a digital strand of the school’s programme to extend the reach of the offer to teachers and students in classrooms across the UK. Manage the commissioning of new learning content, working closely with the wider Schools team and curatorial colleagues.
• To work closely with, and advise, the Head of Learning and Programmes, Digital Advisory Group, and other colleagues across the Museum to identify, create and respond to opportunities for strategic partnerships.
• To deliver consistent, high-quality products and online content characterised by innovation, diversity and relevance, while being engaging and enjoyable for audiences. Manage the development and review of existing digital learning resources, including technical aspects, in liaison with other Museum colleagues.
• Effectively deliver projects that achieve agreed strategic aims to a high quality, and within budget, time and resourcing constraints. This will include working with external contractors and partners.
• To conduct a thorough review of digital resources with the wider team and develop new engaging content as Masterplan activities begin.
• Using a strong data-led approach, research, monitor, evaluate and improve the programme, conducting user research with schools and teachers ensuring the programme delivers on agreed Museum aims and vision, and meets all relevant targets.
• Support delivery of the Museum’s digital strategy, working with colleagues across the Museum. Provide copy and develop content for social media, website and other platforms.
• Contribute to the development of funding proposals and applications for funding.
• Act as a public representative of the Museum, liaising with external organisations and working with them on matters relating to adult programmes and learning within the United Kingdom.
• Maintain an up-do-date knowledge and awareness of digital programmes and technological developments in the sector and more widely and share this knowledge with colleagues.
• Other duties as directed by the Head of Learning and Programmes.

Main work pressures and challenges:

• Develop innovative digital programmes and products that deliver for audiences, and respond to the Museum’s aims and vision, ensuring projects are delivered within budget, time and resourcing constraints.
• Lead a team, delegating work within a fast-paced environment to tight deadlines, managing the delivery of several projects at once, as well as maintaining BAU activity.
• Work flexibly to deliver innovative and creative digital programming during a time of change to the Museum’s estate arising from masterplan projects.

Key dimensions:

• Creatively grow the Museum’s digital learning offer, ensuring the approach is coherent and consistent with the Museum’s vision and values and delivers on audience needs, including those in the national curriculum.
• Allocate and oversee the development and delivery of digital projects that respond to audiences, within time and budget and with risks appropriately managed. Ensure ongoing delivery of digital programming as part of BAU.
• Work collaboratively with learning colleagues, curators, IS, other internal stakeholders, as well as external partners, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure the success of digital learning programmes.
• Ensure the recruitment, professional development, and motivation of the team.

What are the performance targets or standards?

• A key part of the role is the ability to influence and inspire individuals across the organisation and lead multi-disciplinary project teams in the development and delivery of digital programmes and products in line with the Museum’s vision and strategic goals.
• Deliver innovative and appealing digital learning outputs that attracts and maintains audiences, including schools and young people.

What changes are likely to occur in the next two years to this job?

• The Museum is embarking on a period of significant change. As our masterplan projects come online, creativity and adaptability will be key as we start to renovate our main site. This will be a pivotal role in ensuring schools and other audiences are able to engage with the collection during disruption to the Museum’s main site.
