JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher
Regulations

(Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5

  1. Exercise of general professional duties
  2. A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as circumstances require, including:
  • (a) Under the reasonable direction of the principal in a school they are employed in;
  • (b) When employed by a board without a specific school assignment, under the reasonable direction of the board and the principal of any school where they may work.
  • Exercise of particular duties
  • A teacher shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the board, including teaching, assessing, reporting, and participating in school activities.
  • Specific Responsibilities
    1. Planning
    2. Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
    3. Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
    4. Assessing and reporting on pupils' development and progress.
    1. General
    2. Promoting pupils' progress and well-being;
    3. Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters;
    4. Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs;
    5. Communicating with parents and external bodies;
    6. Participating in relevant meetings.
    1. Assessment/Reporting
    2. Providing assessments, reports, and references on pupils, respecting confidentiality.
    1. Staff Development
    2. Participating in staff development schemes;
    3. Reviewing and developing teaching methods and materials;
    4. Collaborating on curriculum development and pastoral arrangements.
    1. Discipline/Health and Safety
    2. Maintaining order and safeguarding health and safety;
    3. Participating in school meetings related to curriculum and organization.
    1. Public Examinations
    2. Preparing pupils for public exams, assessing and reporting, supervising during exams.
    1. Management Activities/Administration
    2. Contributing to staff appointments, managing other teachers, and participating in curriculum and school management activities.
    1. Working Hours and Days
    2. Available for 195 days/year, with specific hours and duties as specified; not exceeding weekly teaching hours in primary and secondary schools; breaks and other duties as outlined.
    1. Staff Cover
    2. Providing cover for absent teachers under specified conditions.

    • Registration: Must be registered with GTCNI before starting.
    Section 2 - Additional Essential Criteria (Interview)
    • Knowledge: Curriculum, safeguarding, teaching strategies for SEN, behaviour management, IT skills.
    • Skills: Effective teaching, classroom management, teamwork, communication, problem-solving.
    • Personal Qualities: Motivation, initiative, adaptability, professionalism, stamina.
    • Values: Reflecting school ethos and values.
    Section 3 - Desirable Criteria
    • Qualifications: 2:1 Honours Degree in Physics or relevant subject.
