Job description

The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) is seeking an outstanding scholar and visionary leader to head its Department of Academic Research (DAR).

As a key member of The Institute's senior leadership team, the Head of DAR will provide strategic direction and drive The Institute's research agenda, ensuring its position as a global leader in Islamic Studies, with particular focus on Ismaili, Shi'i and Qur'anic Studies.

The postholder will lead on the development and delivery of research programmes, foster excellence in academic output, mentor faculty, and build strong international collaborations that extend the Institute's impact worldwide.

We are looking for:
  • Proven leadership in research strategy and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Strong record of publications and recognised standing in the field (professorial/advanced associate professor).
  • Ability to mentor faculty, secure funding, and engage diverse audiences.
  • Fluency in Arabic and another relevant language; additional language skills desirable.

The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) undertakes research, produces publications and runs educational programmes that promote scholarship in previously marginalised areas of the study of Islam.

The IIS is a registered charity and works on a highly interdisciplinary basis, partnering with several institutions of learning, including SOAS, and University College London.
