Job description

Don Valley Academy is seeking to appoint a Head of Department for MFL to join our academy in September 2025 or earlier if possible, on a full-time, permanent basis.

OUR VISION

At Delta Academies Trust, we recognize the importance of learning a modern foreign language and believe every pupil should have this opportunity. We have invested significantly in developing an outstanding curriculum, which has increased pupil engagement and the number of pupils studying MFL across our 17 secondary academies.

OUR CURRICULUM

We have created carefully sequenced five-year curriculum plans for French and Spanish, aligned with the national curriculum and the 2016 MFL Pedagogy Review. Each plan is fully resourced, with lessons prepared for adaptation. We utilize an online coursebook and knowledge organizers, and include cultural topics to foster a love for languages and understanding of different cultures. An online vocabulary learning platform supports our teaching, complemented by a team of 17 native language assistants who enrich the learning experience.

HOW WE SUPPORT YOU

Our Senior MFL Director, an expert in French and Spanish, leads a team of two MFL directors and a lead teacher, all based in our academies to support staff and students daily. We value high-quality CPD, with subject-specific sessions every half term, encouraging sharing of best practices and current research. While our curriculum model is consistent across the trust, we support individual professional development to nurture talent and a passion for language teaching.

OUR FUTURE

Our leadership team has collaborated with the DFE and examination boards on GCSE developments. We are proud to have four academies in the DFE Latin Centre of Excellence and are preparing a bid to become one of 15 MFL hubs in England, influencing national MFL teaching.

Your new Academy

Don Valley Academy is a vibrant, oversubscribed secondary school with over 1100 students from Year 7 to 11, serving a diverse community. Despite challenges, students are polite and engaged. The academy fosters collaboration, professionalism, and wellbeing, with a recent Ofsted inspection rating of 'Good', with potential for 'Outstanding'. We are also an EEF Research School, committed to evidence-based teaching and continuous improvement.
