National: £68,967 £88,900 (inclusive of a potential allowance of up to £19,993)

The Role Head of Data Analytics & Reporting Transformation

The Data Analytics & Reporting Transformation Team is a new and evolving function that plays a key role in shaping how MoJ delivers its data reporting capability.

The team develops reporting tools such as dashboards, leads work on improving the production of data for statistical reporting, and manages both internal and public-facing data dissemination tools.

The focus in all these areas is in ensuring that data reporting follows best practices in automation, data pipelines, ELT processes, and data modelling, making reporting more efficient and reliable. This requires close collaboration with statisticians, data analysts, data engineers, and analytics engineers to deliver end-to-end processes which transform the department’s raw data into effective and scalable reporting solutions. The team is also responsible for supporting others in the organisation to do the same.

This is an opportunity to lead a team at the forefront of leveraging MoJ’s cutting-edge data technology infrastructure and expertise to deliver reporting solutions that meet organisational needs while making the best use of available data and technology.

As Head of Data Analytics and Reporting Transformation, you will lead a team developing improved reporting solutions for MoJ, as well as setting the wider strategic agenda for data reporting within the department. You will set work priorities for the team as well as communicating with others across the wider organisation to embed improvements in data reporting practices.

With an emphasis on embedding the use of automated processes in data reporting, the role requires someone with appropriate technical knowledge and experience, particularly in the fields of data and analytics engineering, data warehousing, BI tools and data visualisation. The post holder will use this experience to define and develop technical solutions to data reporting requirements within MoJ’s existing AWS cloud infrastructure, leading a team of specialists in the application of these techniques.

This role aligns against Head of Analytics Engineering from the Government Digital and Data Framework

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership: Set the direction for data reporting across the organisation, ensuring alignment with wider data, digital, and analytical strategies.
  • Reporting & Data Model Oversight: Ensure that data reporting is built on best practices in automation, data pipelines, and structured data models, working with technical teams to develop scalable and efficient solutions.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Management: Work closely with statisticians, analysts, data engineers, and analytics engineers to ensure reporting needs are met using high-quality, well-structured data.
  • Team Management & Development: Lead and develop a team of reporting specialists, fostering a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and professional development.
  • Technology & Tools: Oversee the selection and use of reporting tools and platforms, ensuring they are fit for purpose and aligned with the organisation’s data and technology ecosystem. Promote and implement automation in reporting processes to improve efficiency, reduce manual effort, and enhance data reliability.
  • Agile Ways of Working: Embed agile principles within the team to deliver reporting solutions iteratively, responding to organisational priorities and user feedback.
  • 37 hours per week and flexible working options including working from home, working part-time, job sharing, or working compressed hours.

Person Specification
  • Able to demonstrate an ability to set and implement a vision for data reporting and visualisation for MoJ, ensuring alignment with wider organisational data, digital, and analytical strategies. Presentation
  • Strong knowledge and experience of data reporting tools, data pipelines, ELT processes, and data modelling principles, with experience of guiding teams on best practices.
  • Experience working with a range of stakeholders across the data value chain, including statisticians, analysts, data engineers, and senior decision-makers, translating complex requirements to shape and deliver reporting solutions.
  • Experience leading and managing a team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience communicating complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences and an ability to influence decision-making at senior levels.
