Job description

Role: To lead on, and further develop, Computer Science at The Grange School. Overseeing the delivery of KS3, GCSE and A Level Computer Science and possibly serving as Head of Faculty.

Description

Reports to: Deputy Head Academic

The Grange School is seeking to recruit a new Head of Computer Science starting from January 2026. If the candidate is available earlier, from September 2025, this may be considered. During the academic year, the school will transition to a Faculty system, and the successful applicant might also be considered for the future Head of Faculty role.

Computer Science is offered at GCSE (Edexcel) and A Level (OCR), and is also part of the Key Stage 3 curriculum. In Summer 2024, 46% of GCSE candidates achieved grades 9-8; 80% of A Level candidates achieved A*-A.

The post holder is expected to offer co-curricular activities related to the digital world. Currently, there is one full-time staff member assisting with teaching Computer Science.

Responsibilities

The following professional duties complement the expectations for any member of the teaching staff at The Grange School, as outlined in the Senior School Teacher Job Description.

Head Of Department

Leads and manages the process of annual Departmental Self Review (DSR), which includes:

  1. Forming an annual Department Development Plan in collaboration with colleagues, evaluating exam results using the Data Pack;
  2. Having formal discussions with the SLT link at least twice a year to review and plan progress;
  3. Reviewing departmental data regularly and implementing necessary actions;
  4. Conducting lesson observations to support teaching and learning development;
  5. Using baseline data to monitor and improve departmental and pupil performance;
  6. Completing an annual evaluation of progress;
  7. Ensuring the department runs efficiently, meeting deadlines for DSR, exam entries, and requisitions;
  8. Managing appraisal, welfare, training, and induction of department staff, including mentoring NQTs;
  9. Engaging in personal leadership and management development;
  10. Staying updated with educational developments in the subject area;
  11. Ensuring departmental adherence to the Departmental Handbook, including work setting, marking, and reporting;
  12. Reporting departmental difficulties to the SLT Line Manager;
  13. Holding regular departmental meetings and sharing minutes with relevant managers;
  14. Attending Head of Department Meetings;
  15. Developing and updating syllabuses, schemes of work, and departmental materials;
  16. Overseeing textbook and resource selection, and teaching methods;
  17. Managing departmental budget;
  18. Implementing Health and Safety policies;
  19. Maintaining departmental furniture and fabric;
  20. Participating in Open Days and Sixth Form events;
  21. Coordinating timetable allocations and rooming for staff;
  22. Covering for absent staff when necessary;
  23. Participating in staff recruitment processes;
  24. Collaborating with other departments on cross-curricular activities;
  25. Ensuring pupils are entered for exams in coordination with the Examinations Office;
  26. liaising with the Junior School subject coordinator as appropriate.

    All staff are expected to undertake additional duties as assigned by the Head. Heads of Department may have specific tasks related to their areas, clarified by the Head or Deputy Head (Academic).
