Head of Commercial – Markel Law

We are looking for a commercial lawyer to capitalise upon an existing strong client base. This is a great opportunity for either an established Commercial Partner, General Counsel or someone who is ready to take the step up to a Partner/ GC role and with a proven track record of successful client management.

We have an established presence across a broad range of sectors, including a particular immersion within the tech and health care sectors. Our clients range from SMEs to larger regional, national and international companies and comprise private, charitable and public sector businesses/organisations.

There is the backup and support that you would find in larger firms in terms of marketing, admin and business development, but you will be given significant autonomy and independence that you wouldn't necessarily find within national firms. You would have the opportunity to have an impact and be instrumental in establishing a department within an ambitious and growing firm.

There is a friendly office environment, and you will be surrounded by experienced, high-quality, respondent lawyers across commercial litigation, employment, regulatory and personal injury.

Markel Law LLP is a law firm, independently authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

We handle a broad range of legal services for Markel policyholders, associations and leading businesses across a range of sectors. Our teams are spread across offices in Manchester, Leeds, London and Croydon, employing over 60 lawyers. We are recognised as leading experts across commercial, civil, personal injury, employment and regulatory law often handling complex, high value claims and disputes with a unique focus on commerciality and client outcomes rather than profit.

Skills & Experience:

1. Strong commercial expertise and able to demonstrate a commercial approach to client work.
2. Experience in fostering and developing client relationships and a desire to continue with this.
3. Strong people leadership skills to manage and support a growing team/department.
4. Experience in business development activities, acting as an ambassador for the firm, and building professional relationships with new and existing clients.
5. Work predominantly on cases that are privately funded, with some exposure to cases that are funded under legal expenses insurance policies.
6. Embrace the challenge of expanding knowledge into new areas of law.
7. Deliver clear, accurate and pragmatic advice based on both the legal and commercial realities of a client’s position.
8. Develop and assist with the implementation of business development strategies.
9. Achieve personal and team targets, audit and quality requirements, service level agreements (SLA), and key performance indicators.
10. Operate within a departmental structure delivering a consistently excellent standard of legal services to our clients.
