About The Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary is an international animal welfare organization dedicated to caring for and protecting donkeys worldwide. Our vision is a world where every donkey has a good quality of life, and our mission is to improve the lives of donkeys every day.

There are over 60 million working donkeys and mules globally, with millions being killed annually for the inhumane donkey skin trade. This has prompted the African Union to announce plans for a moratorium on donkey slaughter and to develop strategies for working animals across the continent. Our advocacy work aims to protect donkeys and mules, ensuring their health and welfare.

Role: Head of Advocacy

As Head of Advocacy, you will collaborate with the Director of Advocacy & Campaigns, the CEO, and other senior management to develop and execute advocacy strategies aligned with organizational goals, integrating efforts across departments.

About You

• Significant experience in strategic advocacy leadership.
• Proven ability to lead teams in developing and implementing advocacy strategies.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with experience influencing governments, intergovernmental bodies, and partners.
• Creative and effective advocacy planning experience.
• International experience in a leadership role across departments.
• Ability to translate complex messages for diverse stakeholders, including senior management and international colleagues.
• Experience working with media at national and international levels.

About the Role

Key responsibilities include:

• Designing and implementing advocacy strategies to effect lasting change for donkeys and mules.
• Building networks of stakeholders to achieve impactful welfare improvements.
• Representing the organization at stakeholder engagements, forums, and media interactions.
• Leading the development of a global advocacy strategy supporting team efforts.
• Collaborating with other departments to ensure advocacy is integrated into organizational activities.
• Responding to unexpected events with organizational advocacy support.
• Managing the advocacy team's work, budget, and planning, including line management responsibilities.

This is a full-time, permanent position starting as soon as possible, working 35 hours per week, primarily from home, with occasional onsite work and travel.
