Job Summary

The Head Instructor is a key member of our program delivery team, possessing the ability to deliver a diverse range of learn to skate programs, instructional hockey programs, camps, and clinics, that are consistent with established curriculums and organizational standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Delivery: Leads a team of part-time instructors to deliver programs, clinics, and camps, based on the scheduled hours they’re assigned.
  • Participant Experience: Adaptable and able to ensure that the program delivery and communication are relevant to the audience and type of program, providing the best possible experience for each participant.
  • Customer Experience: Has the ability to speak professionally and confidently to customers in-person at the sports complex, including answering questions before or after the session, providing recommendations on future programming, and addressing any concerns.
  • Team Player: Ability to understand and implement the standards and best practices that are communicated by the Manager, Program Delivery, with a desire to see the continued growth of Canlan Sports camps and programs.

Qualifications and Education
  • Possess or be willing and able to attain relevant NCCP certification, Respect in Sport (Three Months from Hire Date), Applicable Hockey Canada safety programs, or additional coaching and development certifications.
  • Graduation from post-secondary institution in child development, teaching, kinesiology, exercise science, sport management, or an equivalent industry experience not required, but recommended.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Sport for Life Long-Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD)
  • Basic first aid training is required or must be willing to be obtained upon successful hire.
  • Completion of a vulnerable sector check
Abilities, Attributes and Experience
  • A minimum of three (3) years of work experience in an on-ice instructional or coaching capacity
  • Ability to facilitate instructional programming for all age groups and skill levels, including pre-school, youth, and adult participants. Demonstrates a strong understanding of skating and hockey fundamentals, and the ability to implement established drill and lesson plans.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, work well under pressure, and always prioritize the customer experience.
  • Participation as a member of a youth sports organization, or any junior, college, or professional sports experience may be considered an asset.
  • Parent and/or player testimonials confirming instructor or coaching experience may be requested.
