Main Responsibilities
- Overall responsibility for areas including woodland, pond, walkways, gravel areas, orchard, polytunnel, greenhouse, walled garden, drives, borders, lawns, courtyard, plant containers, hanging baskets, hot tub cleaning, and water monitoring.
- Collaborate with the General Manager to create and follow a matrix of routine and seasonal tasks; plan, cost, and obtain quotes for garden projects, passing them to the Estates Manager for approval.
- Develop and maintain a diverse kitchen garden producing seasonal herbs, vegetables, and edible flowers in coordination with the Head Chef.
- Lead the gardens team by assigning and monitoring tasks such as weeding, pruning, mowing, digging, bonfire supervision, leaf blowing, watering, sowing, harvesting, salting, and plant feeding.
- Implement wildlife conservation initiatives to support and promote wildlife welfare within the estate.
- Plan and administer appropriate fertilisation, pruning, soil management, temperature control, propagation, and pest/disease management according to seasonal and weather conditions.
- Maintain records of all gardening activities, including sowing, harvesting, temperature monitoring, fertiliser use, pond treatments, and tree health.
- Provide regular updates to the General Manager regarding activities and scheduled work.
Qualifications and Personal Requirements
Extensive knowledge of horticulture with proven practical experience, especially in establishing and maintaining a diverse walled garden for seasonal produce. Strong understanding of trees, species, and estate impact. Motivated, well-organised, with excellent communication skills and a positive, flexible attitude.
