Purpose Statement
Providing custodial services, ensuring an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and visitors; overseeing the preparation of facilities for classroom activities and events; supporting assigned custodians; and ensuring that tasks are completed safely, properly, and timely.
Essential Functions
- Directs and participates in cleaning facilities and grounds (e.g., classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, cafeteria, multipurpose rooms) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
- Performs minor maintenance on custodial equipment, furniture, and fixtures (e.g., changing vacuum belts, bags) to ensure proper functioning.
- Oversees summer maintenance activities (e.g., floor stripping/waxing, furniture moving, painting) to facilitate summer projects.
- Prepares sites for daily operations (e.g., opening gates, raising flags, sweeping walkways) to ensure facilities are operational and hazard-free.
- Replenishes supplies in classrooms and restrooms (e.g., paper towels, soap) to ensure availability for daily use.
- Responds to safety or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, vandalism, alarms) by taking appropriate action or notifying relevant personnel.
- Participates in seasonal grounds work such as snow removal.
- Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment; requisitions as needed.
- Performs work at heights up to 12 feet using ladders/scaffolding (e.g., cleaning, changing lightbulbs, replacing ceiling tiles).
- Maintains daily attendance and punctuality to meet work unit goals.
- Secures facilities and grounds (e.g., doors, gates, alarms, lights) to minimize property damage and liability.
- Supports district maintenance staff in site custodial activities.
- Meets daily with the Building Principal to review activities.
- Maintains accurate attendance records of staff.
- Attends in-service training (e.g., blood-borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid) to stay updated on procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment.
- Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
- Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, especially for cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Five years of experience in commercial cleaning or building maintenance.
- Two years of supervisory experience; one year of college may substitute for one year of supervision.
- Proficiency with basic Microsoft applications, email, internet, and work order systems.
- Ability to maintain records such as timesheets and work orders.
- Ability to operate custodial machinery, climb scaffolding/ladders, lift/push/pull over 50 lbs., and perform custodial tasks requiring strength and agility.
Physical Demands
This is a physically demanding role involving standing, walking, lifting heavy objects, operating cleaning equipment, and moving furniture. Frequent stretching and bending are required, with specific vision abilities needed, including close, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
Working Conditions
Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (hours may be adjusted). Grade 5 Custodian pay based on Union Contract.
