Head and Neck Senior Clinical Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The successful candidate will be part of a cohesive team involving head and neck surgeons (OMFS & ENT), orthodontists and allied health professionals. The post would offer opportunities for the fellow to further their knowledge, experience and skills in head and neck surgery including major head & neck resection and reconstruction (including micro surgery),Trans oral robotic surgery, trans oral laser surgery, salivary gland surgery (including endoscopy) and other aspects of OMFS (orthographic, trauma etc).

Full Registration with the GMC with a licence to practice at time of application is essential.

Main duties of the job

The fellow is expected to work closely with specialist trainees in OMFS & ENT and dental core trainees.

The fellow is also expected to provide second tier on-call cover.The role can be tailored to the training needs of the fellow including cross specialty exposure, if required.

As a Head and Neck fellow, he/she would be expected to attend Head and Neck clinics, work up patients and present at Head and Neck MDT and get involved with overall management of head and neck patients.

Job responsibilities

The Maxillo Facial Fellow will undertake general and specialist clinics. They will undertake minor surgery lists under local anaesthesia and assist consultants undertaking major head and neck, orthognathic and TMJ surgery.

This is an appointment to cover from Feb 2026-February 2027. Possession of the MBBS, GDC, plus full GMC registration with Licence to Practise at the time of application is essential.

The elective work involves daily ward rounds, time-tabled sessions for day case, theatre and outpatient clinics. Whilst it is not a recognised training post, this post is well supervised and there are opportunities to learn and develop skills.

This post will participate in the OMF On-call rota.

The post will be based at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Qualifications/Eligibility
  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
  • BDA or Equivalent
  • Full MRCS or equivalent higher qualification
  • Life Support Qualification - ATLS
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice at time of application
  • Registration with the General Dental Council
  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty
Experience
  • Applicants should either have a minimum of 4 years training in Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery in a Specialist/Specialty Registrar placement (NTN holder) or be post CCT or eqivalent
  • Previous experience in Head and Neck Oncology or Orofacial Deformity and TMJ
Eligibility & Audit
  • Evidence of active participation in audit.
  • Evidence of research achievements e.g. publications of relevant study or laboratory and/or clinical research material in peer review journals, presentations at regional or national level
  • Publications & Presentations
  • Evidence of participation in risk management

  • Evidence of academic achievements relevant to OMFS e.g. postgraduate degrees, prizes, awards, grants or distinctions

  • Evidence of research achievements relevant to OMFS
