Job description

Job Title: Hardware Architect - Naval Vessels (Frigates & Sonar Systems)

Location: UK - Hybrid/Onsite

Contract Type: Statement of Work (Outside IR35)

Security Clearance: Current & Active Clearance Required

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Hardware Architect with a strong background in naval vessel systems, specifically frigate platforms. Experience in sonar systems is highly desirable. This role will involve defining and overseeing hardware architecture, ensuring compliance with defence standards, and supporting key project milestones.

This opportunity is structured as a Statement of Work and sits outside IR35. Applicants must have current and active security clearance to be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Architectural Design: Develop and define the hardware architecture for naval systems, ensuring integration with existing and new ship platforms.
  2. Sonar & Sensor Systems: Provide expertise in sonar systems, radar, and other sensor integration where applicable.
  3. System Compliance: Ensure all designs align with MOD and defence industry standards (e.g., DEF STAN, MIL-STD).
  4. Technical Oversight: Work with cross-functional teams, including software, mechanical, and electrical engineers, to deliver robust solutions.
  5. Documentation & Reviews: Produce high-quality technical documentation, system specifications, and conduct design reviews.
  6. Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with end clients, subcontractors, and engineering teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  7. Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks associated with system design and implementation.

Essential Skills & Experience

  1. Proven experience as a Hardware Architect within the defence or naval sector.
  2. Strong background in frigate ship systems and onboard hardware architecture.
  3. Knowledge of sonar systems and their integration within naval platforms is highly beneficial.
  4. Experience working with DEF STAN, MIL-STD, and other relevant industry standards.
  5. Understanding of power distribution, networking, and embedded systems in maritime environments.
  6. Ability to create high-level hardware architectures and ensure successful integration with wider defence systems.
  7. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  8. Experience managing full hardware lifecycle, from concept through to deployment.
  9. Active security clearance (MOD/DV/SC) is mandatory.

Contract Type: Statement of Work (Outside IR35)

Duration: Initial contract with extensions based on project phases

Location: UK-based, with on-site visits as required
