Job summary

Gov Facilities Services Limited (GFSL) is seeking a practical Handyperson / Maintenance Operative to join the Facilities Maintenance Team at HMP The Mount. This role is full-time, 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday, within a secure prison environment.

You will work alongside skilled trades, use hand and power tools, and help maintain building fabric, safety, and operations. A focus on safety, reliability, and teamwork is essential to support prisoners, staff, and visitors.

Qualifications

• Experience of prison environment is desirable.
• Experience of using hand and power tools.
• Experience in building fabric / Hard FM environment.
• Up-to-date First Aid at Work qualification.
• Level 2 qualification in English and Maths.
• Good Health & Safety knowledge.
• Excellent organisational, time management and people skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair building fabric and fabrics in secure environment.
• Operate hand and power tools to support maintenance tasks.
• Collaborate with crafts and admin staff to ensure smooth operation.
• Support safety and security procedures on site.

Contract: Full time/39hpw/Monday-Friday

We are seeking a practical and confident Handyperson / Maintenance Operative to join our team at HMP The Mount, a category C & Adult/Male prison as an Escort / Fabric Operative.

HMP The Mount runs like a self-contained town, it takes hundreds of people to keep it functioning, and as the Facilities Maintenance Team we are committed and driving the smooth and safe operation, like a heart that pumps blood through the body, everything we do impacts every prisoner, employee, and visitor, and wider to the families and community.

As an Escort / Fabric Operative, you will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced and passionate colleagues who vary from Plumbers, Electricians, Carpenters, Painters, to Cleaners, and Administrators, and others, who are all dedicated to making a positive difference, providing a safe and secure environment for all.

We are a Ministry of Justice business and provide critical and time-bound services to HMPPS, and are looking for an experienced Handyperson to join us as an Escort / Fabric Operative with a combination of:

• Experience of prison environment (Desirable)
• Experience of use of hand and power tools
• Previous experience of working within a building fabric / Hard FM environment
• Up to date First Aid at Work Qualification
• Level 2 qualification in English and Maths
• Good Health & Safety knowledge
• Excellent organisational, time management and people skills

Future Plans.

GFSL has been notified by it's shareholder (MOJ) that the provision of FM Services will in future be delivered by the private sector. This means that following a successful procurement process, GFSL's services will complete transfer to a private sector provider/providers no sooner than August 2027.
