An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a high-performing, forward-thinking team as a Consultant Haematologist in the North East. This is a full-time position with flexibility in job planning for the right candidate. You’ll be joining an experienced and motivated team of Consultant Haematologists, delivering high-quality care across the region.
The role offers the chance to contribute to service development, lead specialist areas of interest, and collaborate with primary and tertiary care providers. You must be fully registered with the GMC, hold a licence to practise, and be on (or within 6 months of being entered into) the Specialist Register in Haematology.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive haematology services across both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Deliver patient care across multiple sites in collaboration with general physicians and multidisciplinary teams.
- Participate in regular outpatient clinics and day unit work involving bone marrow biopsies, chemotherapy, and other procedures.
- Engage in daily haematology liaison for inpatient cases, supporting colleagues on general medical wards.
- Participate in the haematology on-call rota for weekday and weekend coverage, ensuring continuity of care.
- Contribute to the planning and future development of integrated haematology services in coordination with tertiary centres.
- Engage with local and regional multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) for lymphoma, leukaemia, and myeloma cases via regular virtual or in-person meetings.
- Participate in weekly MDTs and review all new malignant haematology cases through NEHODS.
- Support regional anticoagulation and transfusion services, including face-to-face and digital clinics.
- Provide expert guidance on haemostasis, thrombosis, and blood transfusion services, working alongside transfusion practitioners.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, teaching, and service improvement initiatives.
Service Overview
- The service operates across several hospitals and day units in the North East.
- Outpatient and day case activity forms the majority of the workload.
- Day units are equipped for chemotherapy, venesections, and bone marrow biopsies, with support from chemotherapy-trained nurses.
- The Trust provides level 2a haematology care; higher-level care is delivered in partnership with regional centres.
- Diagnostic and molecular testing is supported via NEHODS and regional laboratories.
- The service uses Chemocare for chemotherapy prescribing and benefits from shared regional infrastructure.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent.
- Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists (MRCPath) or equivalent.
- CCT in Haematology (or within 6 months of the interview date).
- MRCP Part 1.
- Higher academic qualification (MSc, MD, PhD).
Experience
- Broad and thorough training in clinical and laboratory haematology.
- Experience managing malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion and manage independent patient care.
- Experience in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.
- Evidence of audit involvement and a good understanding of clinical governance.
- Experience in service development or research.
- Specialist interest to complement existing services.
- Administrative or management experience.
- Implementation of change through audit or QI initiatives.
